PIN numbers and passwords are now used every day for the likes of cash machines, burglar alarms, mobile phones, car radios, taxi services, cable TV and telephone banking.

    Trying to sell shares online can involve remembering a password and a favourite date which should not be a birthday. The average Briton now has 13 different passwords to remember and more than a third (39 per cent) admit to regularly forgetting these details.
