One of the popular misconceptions among Linux system administrators is that their platform is "bulletproof" and that viruses only impact Windows machines. While it's true that the majority of viruses attack Windows machines, there is still a security threat to Linux systems. It's important to recall that the "granddaddy of all worms" was the Morris worm back in November of 1988. Written by Robert Morris at Cornell University, it was written to spread but not to cause damage. The Morris Worm was written to exploit vulnerabilities in the sendmail program along with weak passwords. However, with viruses there really is no quality assurance cycle and the worm had bugs. It infected an individual computer thousands of times, which slowed down the computer.

Conservative estimates put the number of infected machines at over 60,000 - remember that this was before the modern Internet era. The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) was established as a direct result of the Morris Worm.
