Ubuntu 16.04 ESM USN-5591-2 Critical: AWS-HWE Kernel Denial Of Service

ubuntu
Calendar Grey September 1, 2022
Dist Ubuntu Esm H88
Ubuntu Security Notice USN-5592-3 highlights a vulnerability in the system libraries that may result in data corruption or unauthorized access.
The system could be made to crash or run programs as an administrator.

Summary

The system could be made to crash or run programs as an administrator.

Software Description:

- linux-aws-hwe: Linux kernel for Amazon Web Services (AWS-HWE) systems

Details:

It was discovered that the virtual terminal driver in the Linux kernel

did not properly handle VGA console font changes, leading to an

out-of-bounds write. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial

of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code.

Update Instructions

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following
package versions:

Ubuntu 16.04 ESM:
   linux-image-4.15.0-1140-aws-hwe 4.15.0-1140.151~16.04.1
   linux-image-aws-hwe 4.15.0.1140.127

After a standard system update you need to reboot your computer to make
all the necessary changes.

ATTENTION: Due to an unavoidable ABI change the kernel updates have
been given a new version number, which requires you to recompile and
reinstall all third party kernel modules you might have installed.
Unless you manually uninstalled the standard kernel metapackages
(e.g. linux-generic, linux-generic-lts-RELEASE, linux-virtual,
linux-powerpc), a standard system upgrade will automatically perform
this as well.
