Background ========= SKK is a Japanese input method for Emacs. Affected packages ================ ------------------------------------------------------------------- Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 app-i18n/skktools < 1.2-r1 > = 1.2-r1 Description ========== skkdic-expr.c insecurely writes temporary files to a location in the form $TMPDIR/skkdic$PID.{pag,dir,db}, where $PID is the process ID. Impact ===== A local attacker could create symbolic links in the directory where the temporary files are written, pointing to a valid file somewhere on the filesystem that is writable by the user running the SKK software. When SKK writes the temporary file, the target valid file would then be overwritten with the contents of the SKK temporary file. Workaround ========= There is no known workaround at this time. Resolution ========= All SKK Tools users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose "> =app-i18n/skktools-1.2-r1" References ========= [ 1 ] CVE-2007-3916 https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2007-3916 Availability =========== This GLSA and any updates to it are available for viewing at the Gentoo Security Website: https://security.gentoo.org/glsa/200710-10 Concerns? ======== Security is a primary focus of Gentoo Linux and ensuring the confidentiality and security of our users machines is of utmost importance to us. Temporary files (in the sgml-tools package) were created without any special permissions, and so in most cases would be world-readable.. ` --------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Hat, Inc. Red Hat Security Advisory Synopsis: Updated sgml-tools packages fix insecure temporary file handling Advisory ID: RHSA-2001:027-02 Issue date: 2001-03-09 Updated on: 2001-03-14 Product: Red Hat Linux Keywords: sgml-tools /tmp tempfile Cross references: Obsoletes: --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Topic: Insecure handling of temporary file permissions could lead to other userson a multi-user system being able to read the documents being converted. 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Linux 5.2 - alpha, i386, sparc Red Hat Linux 6.2 - alpha, i386, sparc Red Hat Linux 7.0 - alpha, i386 3. Problem description: Temporary files were created without any special permissions, and so in most cases would be world-readable. The fixed packages create a secure temporary directory first (readable only by the owner), and then create temporary files inside that. 4. Solution: To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run: rpm -Fvh where is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directly *only* contains the desired RPMs. Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. 5.
