Scientific Linux: 2010-03-18 Low Severity Virtio Driver Update

Low: Virtio drivers for kernel 2.4.21-63.EL. Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2010 14:40:38 -0500 Reply-To: Troy Dawson Sender: Security Errata for Scientific Linux From: Troy Dawson Subject: Security ERRATA Low: Virtio on SL3.x i386/x86_64 Comments: To: "This email address is being protected from spambots. Synopsis: Low: Virtio drivers for kernel 2.4.21-63.EL Issue date: 2010-03-18 This new package provides signed, para-virtualized block and network drivers for Scientific Linux 3 as a KVM virtualized guest. Users may see various warnings during package installation, including: * Different versions of package are already installed. Older versions of the package may cause "File exists" error messages to appear. The package will install successfully the error messages just inform the user that files for devices exist. This warning can be ignored. * If the previous installed package was for a different kernel (for example, kmod-virtio-smp on hugemem system), the installation will fail. Modules cannot be inserted and a "Wrong number of arguments" error message will appear. To fix this issue, create nodes manually as covered in the README file. This issue can be prevented by installing the correct drivers for the kernel package. The virtio packages provide para-virtualized drivers for KVM fully-virtualized Linux guests. The para-virtualized drivers for KVM guests consist of five modules: virtio, virtio_blk, virtio_net, virtio_pci and virtio_ring. All five modules are loaded in case you need both block and network devices drivers. Para-virtualized drivers increase the performance of block and network devices. These drivers are part of version 2.6 of the Linux kernel and have been backported to version 2.4 of the Linux kernel with the help of the official backport suite.
