Using Darkstat for Efficient Traffic Monitoring on Linux Systems

Full-featured traffic analyzers for Linux systems such as ntop and vnstat are widely available, but sometimes you just want a simple program that gives you fast, basic information about the amount of traffic going in and out of the hosts on your network. Darkstat, a packet sniffer that runs as a background process, fills that role. It gathers statistics about network usage and displays them over HTTP. It's an important security practice to know what traffic is going in and out of your network. Have you looked at your network traffic lately? . FBI Carnivore Tool: Design Flaws Impacting Evidence in Investigation

The Register writes, " Fundamental design flaws in the FBI's infamous Carnivore packet sniffer have led to the destruction of evidence related to a suspect possibly involved in Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda network which had been obtained legally under a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant, the watchdog group EPIC has learned. The FBI has long denied that Carnivore is an indiscriminate tool which vacuums up the personal correspondence of innocent persons not targeted for surveillance. But an internal memo obtained by EPIC under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) shows that it does in fact gather the communications of innocent third parties illegally. It appears the FBI has been lying about Carnivore all along, and covering up its deficiencies even to the Justice Department. " . Packet sniffers, sometimes referred to as protocol or network analyzers, are invaluable tools for network and systems administrators. With an abundance of commercial and free software products available, it may be difficult to choose a good product. This article describes Ethereal, a free packet sniffer that not only decodes network traffic, but can filter and analyze it, all with an advanced, GTK-based GUI. Additionally, Ethereal can read the data files from a multitude of other packet sniffers, letting you analyze previously collected data. The files can even be compressed with gzip, and Ethereal will read and write to them invisibly. Ethereal can be downloaded from the main Web site: or from any of their mirrors worldwide. The latest version (as of this writing) is 0.8.19. It requires GTK+ 1.2 or greater, which can be downloaded from: and the libpcap packet capture library, which can be downloaded from: https://www.tcpdump.org/. Perl is also required to build the included documentation. Additionally, it is recommended that you download and install zlib, available at: so that Ethereal can work with gzipped files on the fly, and NET-SNMP libraries, if you want to enable SNMP support, available at: . Pre-compiled binary packages are available for all the major UNIX flavors, as well as for Windows NT. However, the Windows NT version requires more effort to get working and will not be covered here. The link for this article located at SysAdmin is no longer available. . Carnivore: Network-Based Monitoring Tool Used by FBI for Data Interception

Cringely speaks about Carnivore. "Here's all the FBI will say about Carnivore. It sits on the network at the ISP, is PC-based, is "a kind of a sniffer," identifies and saves packets associated with suspected criminals, is installed under a court order, and doesn't itself act as a decryption device. There are supposed to be around 20 Carnivore boxes, and they have been in use since early this year. You don't need a sealed box to do any of these tasks, most of which are already being done for completely legal reasons right inside the router at every ISP. Routers look at every packet, determine what type of packet it is, where it is coming from and where it is going to, then the router delivers the packet to its intended destination. This is what routers do. Adding the Carnivore task is a simple matter of blind copying every packet to or from a bad guy to a third address at the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building in Washington, DC. It's at most a few lines of code and requires no additional hardware." . Robert X. Cringely speaks about Carnivore. 'Here's all the FBI will say about Carnivore.
