ATTENTION: Due to an unavoidable ABIchange the kernel updates have been given a new version number, which requires you to recompile and reinstall all third party kernel modules you might have installed. If you use linux-restricted-modules, you have to update that package as well to get modules which work with the new kernel version. Unless you manually uninstalled the standard kernel metapackages (e.g. linux-generic, linux-server, linux-powerpc), a standard system upgrade will automatically perform this as well. Details follow: NFS did not correctly handle races between fcntl and interrupts. A local attacker on an NFS mount could consume unlimited kernel memory, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2008-4307) Sparc syscalls did not correctly check mmap regions. A local attacker could cause a system panic, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2008-6107) In certain situations, cloned processes were able to send signals to parent processes, crossing privilege boundaries. A local attacker could send arbitrary signals to parent processes, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2009-0028) The 64-bit syscall interfaces did not correctly handle sign extension. A local attacker could make malicious syscalls, possibly gaining root privileges. The x86_64 architecture was not affected. (CVE-2009-0029) The SCTP stack did not correctly validate FORWARD-TSN packets. A remote attacker could send specially crafted SCTP traffic causing a system crash, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2009-0065) The Dell platform device did not correctly validate user parameters. A local attacker could perform specially crafted reads to crash the system, leading to a denial of service. (CVE-2009-0322) Network interfaces statistics for the SysKonnect FDDI driver did not check capabilities. A local user could reset statistics, potentially interfering with packet accounting systems. (CVE-2009-0675) The getsockopt function did not correctly clear certain parameters. A local attacker could read leaked kernel memory, leading to a loss of privacy. (CVE-2009-0676) The syscallinterface did not correctly validate parameters when crossing the 64-bit/32-bit boundary. A local attacker could bypass certain syscall restricts via crafted syscalls. (CVE-2009-0834, CVE-2009-0835) The shared memory subsystem did not correctly handle certain shmctl calls when CONFIG_SHMEM was disabled. Ubuntu kernels were not vulnerable, since CONFIG_SHMEM is enabled by default. Debian DSA-1505 Critical: Alsa-Driver Kernel Memory Leak Exploit

Takashi Iwai supplied a fix for a memory leak in the snd_page_alloc module. Local users could exploit this issue to obtain sensitive information from the kernel (CVE-2007-4571).. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------Debian Security Advisory DSA-1505 This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. http://www.debian.org/security/ dann frazier February 22, 2008 http://www.debian.org/security/faq - ------------------------------------------------------------------------Package : alsa-driver Vulnerability : kernel memory leak Problem type : local Debian-specific: no CVE Id(s) : CVE-2007-4571 Takashi Iwai supplied a fix for a memory leak in the snd_page_alloc module. Local users could exploit this issue to obtain sensitive information from the kernel (CVE-2007-4571). For the stable distribution (etch), this problem has been fixed in version 1.0.13-5etch1. This issue was already fixed for the version of ALSA provided by linux-2.6 in DSA 1479. For the oldstable distribution (sarge), this problem has been fixed in version 1.0.8-7sarge1. The prebuilt modules provided by alsa-modules-i386 have been rebuilt to take advantage of this update, and are available in version 1.0.8+2sarge2. For the unstable distributions (sid), this problem was fixed in version 1.0.15-1. We recommend that you upgrade your alsa-driver and alsa-modules-i386 packages. Upgrade instructions - --------------------wget url will fetch the file for you dpkg -i file.deb will install the referenced file. If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for sources.list as given below: apt-get update will update the internal database apt-get upgrade will install corrected packages The prebuilt modules update coincides with an ABI change in the 2.4.27 kernel in oldstable (see DSA 1503). If you are using the prebuilt modules provided by one of the alsa-modules-i386 packages, youwill need to update your kernel to the new ABI before you can use the updated version of that package. For more information about Debian kernel ABI changes, see: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernelABIChanges Any modules manually built from the alsa-source package will need to be rebuilt against the updated alsa-source package to inherit this fix. You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the footer to the proper configuration.
