Debian -- Security Information Matt Zimmerman July 17th, 2004 Debian -- Debian security FAQ - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Package : l2tpd Vulnerability : buffer overflow Problem-Type : remote Debian-specific: no CVE Ids : CAN-2004-0649 Thomas Walpuski reported a buffer overflow in l2tpd, an implementation of the layer 2 tunneling protocol, whereby a remote attacker could potentially cause arbitrary code to be executed by transmitting a specially crafted packet. The exploitability of this vulnerability has not been verified. For the current stable distribution (woody), this problem has been fixed in version 0.67-1.2. For the unstable distribution (sid), this problem has been fixed in version 0.70-pre20031121-2. We recommend that you update your l2tpd package. Debian DSA 152-1 Critical: l2tpd Random Seed Risk Remote Attack

l2tpd, a layer 2 tunneling client/server program, forgot to initialize the random generator, which made all generated random numbers 100% guessable.. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debian Security Advisory DSA 152-1 This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Debian -- Security Information Martin Schulze August 13th, 2002 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Package : l2tpd Vulnerability : missing random seed Problem-Type : remote Debian-specific: no Current versions of l2tpd, a layer 2 tunneling client/server program, forgot to initialize the random generator which made it vulnerable since all generated random number were 100% guessable. When dealing with the size of the value in an attribute value pair, too many bytes were able to be copied, which could lead into the vendor field being overwritten. These problems have been fixed in version 0.67-1.1 for the current stable distribution (woody) and in version 0.68-1 for the unstable distribution (sid). The old stable distribution (potato) is not affected, since it doesn't contain the l2tpd package. We recommend that you upgrade your l2tpd packages. wget url will fetch the file for you dpkg -i file.deb will install the referenced file. If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for sources.list as given below: apt-get update will update the internal database apt-get upgrade will install corrected packages You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the footer to the proper configuration.
