In NetKit through 0.17, rcp.c in the rcp client allows remote rsh servers to bypass intended access restrictions via the filename of . or an empty filename. The impact is modifying the permissions of the target directory on the client side. This is similar to CVE-2018-20685. (CVE-2019-7282) . MGASA-2021-0525 - Updated rsh packages fix security vulnerability Publication date: 25 Nov 2021 URL: https://advisories.mageia.org/MGASA-2021-0525.html Type: security Affected Mageia releases: 8 CVE: CVE-2019-7282, CVE-2019-7283 In NetKit through 0.17, rcp.c in the rcp client allows remote rsh serversto bypass intended access restrictions via the filename of . or an empty filename. The impact is modifying the permissions of the target directory on the client side. This is similar to CVE-2018-20685. (CVE-2019-7282) An issue was discovered in rcp in NetKit through 0.17. For an rcp operation, the server chooses which files/directories are sent to the client. However, the rcp client only performs cursory validation of the object name returned. A malicious rsh server (or Man-in-The-Middle attacker) can overwrite arbitrary files in a directory on the rcp client machine. This is similar to CVE-2019-6111. (CVE-2019-7283). Updated rsh packages that fix a theoretical security issue are now available. This update has been rated as having low security impact by the Red Hat Security Response Team. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Hat Security Advisory Synopsis: Low: rsh security update Advisory ID: RHSA-2005:495-01 Advisory URL: https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2005:495.html Issue date: 2005-06-13 Updated on: 2005-06-13 Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux CVE Names: CAN-2004-0175 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------1. Summary: Updated rsh packages that fix a theoretical security issue are now available. This update has been rated as having low security impact by the Red Hat Security Response Team 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (Advanced Server) version 2.1 - i386, ia64 Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 - ia64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 2.1 - i386 Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS version 2.1 - i386 3. Problem description: The rsh package contains a set of programs that allow users to run commands on remote machines, login to other machines, and copy files between machines, using the rsh, rlogin, and rcp commands. All three of these commands use rhosts-style authentication. The rcp protocol allows a server to instruct a client to write to arbitrary files outside of the current directory. This could potentially cause a security issue if a user uses rcp to copy files from a malicious server. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-0175 to this issue. All users of rsh should upgrade to these updated packages, which resolve these issues. 4. Solution: Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run: rpm -Fvh[filenames] where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the desired RPMs. Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. If up2date fails to connect to Red Hat Network due to SSL Certificate Errors, you need to install a version of the up2date client with an updated certificate. The latest version of up2date is available from the Red Hat FTP site and may also be downloaded directly from the RHN website: https://access.redhat.com 5.
