The public and private agencies involved in the UK Census claim to have taken all precautions to guarantee that the data will be secure. Information held at the main purpose-built processing centre is stored on a closed network of servers with no connection to the outside world, said Census project service director Tom Rowe.

"The system is on a local area network, with no network connections. Anything which people could hack wouldn't be allowed," he said.

The decision was taken to transport the data by road from the processing centre to the head office of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), rather than transmitting the data electronically.
