Privacy advocates have issued a challenge to federal and state officials: Sign the pledge. Specifically, the Privacy Coalition wants them to go on record in support of a personal privacy framework similar those outlined in legislation now before Congress.

"Privacy is the major social issue of the information society and the top technology issue in the 107th Congress," said the organization, which includes a number of liberal and conservative interest groups, from the ACLU to the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC).

Central to the framework are fair information practices the Federal Trade Commission has urged industry to adopt for several years. These are a consumer's right to know how personal information is used; to withhold consent to sell to third parties; to know the data is secure; to access the information; and to correct the data if needed.
