RALEIGH - Red Hat is turning to Netscape to improve its security offerings for enterprise networks.

The Raleigh-based Linux development and services firm announced this morning that it is buying "certain assets" of Netscape Security Solutions from America Online.

According to a filing with the SEC filed shortly after the press announcement, Red Hat is paying $20.5 million in cash for the Netscape assets. Another $2.5 million is payable next year "contingent on certain future customer orders being placed on or before April 30, 2005," the filing says.
