EU Court To Hear Privacy Shield Challenge By Digital Rights Group July 1-2

A legal challenge to the EU-US Privacy Shield, a mechanism used by thousands of companies to authorize data transfers from the European Union to the US, will be heard by Europe’s top court this summer. . The General Court of the EU has set a date of July 1 and 2 to hear the complaint brought by French digital rights group, La Quadrature du Net, against the European Commission’s renegotiated data transfer agreement which argues the arrangement is still incompatible with EU law on account of US government mass surveillance practices. Privacy Shield was only adopted three years ago after its forerunner, Safe Harbor, was struck down by the European Court of Justice in 2015 following the 2013 exposé of US intelligence agencies’ access to personal data, revealed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Wireless-enabled devices, the latest electronic marvels, are steadily becoming integral part of enterprise infrastructure due the tremendous benefits and advantages they bring. Compact, with fast Internet connection they provide a vast range of services but unfortunately there is a cost - generally speaking, wireless-enabled devices are far less secure than their wired counterparts. The goal of this article is to introduce to the reader the two currently available SSH clients, which were designed for improving security of remote access and data transfer via Pocket PC devices. Both of them are free and could be downloaded from a few sites on the Internet. PocketPutty - PocketPC 2003 SSH Client PocketPutty is the "mini" version of the original Putty SSH client for Microsoft Windows platform. As opposed to many other Pocket PC programs, PocketPutty does not require installation process of any kind and could be run as soon as it has been copied to your Pocket PC. Enhancing Data In Motion Security By Rethinking Encryption

Any hacker can tell you that data 'at rest' is much easier to access, but security efforts are being targeted in the wrong place, using complex, costly encryption schemes for data in motion. I recently watched a popular technology TV show that explained how Ethernet broadcasts all communications between two computers to all of the nearby computers, allowing a hacker with a sniffer (software that captures network traffic) to see other users' data. This was true in the old shared-loop days prior to 1994, but today most enterprises transfer data on switched networks. Data is transferred from point to point with no visibility of that data by other network-attached devices. This foils most sniffer-based hacking attempts from outside the corporate data centre. If the hacker is in the data centre itself, you have a very serious and very different problem. In that case the hacker could circumvent the security by loading the sniffer onto the server itself. Encapsulating security payloads, key exchange mechanisms and other components of establishing secure data transfers. In Part 2, we move on to encapsulating security payloads and key exchange mechanisms. IPSec ESP format, specified in RFC 2406, provides confidentiality, authenticity and integrity. The original packet is transparently encrypted by the IPSec layer before being sent and decrypted on the receiving side. An eavesdropper capturing packets in any intermediate node will not be able to recover the original contents of the packet (or, at least, he should not be able to do it in a reasonable amount of time). Mastering Encryption For Secure Data Transfer And Online Privacy

It's always been difficult to keep secrets. It's even more difficult when necessity forces you to write those secrets down and move them around the Internet, whose open systems make it easy for eavesdroppers to glance at the information we send over the wires. The email you send is essentially a digital postcard. A nosy mailman or neighbor can glance at what's written on it as the card visits the many stops along the route from the sender to the receiver's mailbox. We currently rely on the sheer volume of traffic to keep our email private -- security by obscurity. This is not exactly the best way to ensure that sensitive information doesn't get widely distributed to the wrong people. So how are we going to get any measure of privacy on the Internet? The answer lies in an arcane science known as cryptography. The link for this article located at ABCNEWS.com is no longer available. . Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have discovered more vulnerabilities in Secure Shell (SSH) which allow an attacker to learn significant information about what data is being transferred in SSH sessions, including passwords. SSH was designed as a secure channel between two machines, based on strong encryption and authentication. But by observing the rhythm of keystrokes, and using advanced statistical techniques on timing information collected, attackers can pick up significant details. Gnutella Piracy Control Challenges: Security Risks for Users

Gnutella, on the other hand, is one of several decentralized file-sharing networks that aren't businesses and have no central control. That means there's nobody at these networks for the labels to sue--just the consumers who use them. Security experts say that controlling piracy on Gnutella is a daunting task, given the number of users and the amount of data being transferred. But one effect of the RIAA's recent moves may be to put the fear of detection into the hearts of Gnutella users, who thus far have been cloaked in anonymity. "To me, it's posturing," said Bruce Forest, vice president of media and entertainment for Sapient, an Internet consulting firm. "That basically is a, 'I've kicked Napster's [rear] and now I'm coming after Gnutella users.' It's a scare tactic." The link for this article located at LA Times is no longer available. . Cryptcat allows you to pipe data from one host to another using encryption. "Netcat is a simple Unix utility which reads and writes data across network connections, using TCP or UDP protocol. It is designed to be a reliable "back-end" tool that can be used directly or easily driven by other programs and scripts. At the same time, it is a feature-rich network debugging and exploration tool, since it can create almost any kind of connection you would need and has several interesting built-in capabilities. Netcat, or "nc" as the actual program is named, should have been supplied long ago as another one of those cryptic but standard Unix tools."
