AhnLab: New Linux Malware Mining Cryptocurrency and Launching DDoS Attacks

South Korean cybersecurity firm AhnLab Security Emergency Response Center said it has observed a new Linux malware in the wild that deploys a cryptocurrency miner on infiltrated systems using a shell script compiler downloader, reports The Hacker News. According to the report, a successful breach will be followed by execution of the shc downloader malware to fetch the XMRig cryptocurrency miner software and a Perl-based DDoS IRC Bot that allows the attacker to connect through a remote server and proceed to mount distributed denial-of-service attacks. . "It is presumed that after successful authentication through a dictionary attack on inadequately managed Linux SSH servers, various malware were installed on the target system. This bot supports not only DDoS attacks such as TCP flood, UDP flood, and HTTP flood, but various other features including command execution, reverse shell, port scanning, and log deletion," researchers said. Apache Server Defense Against DDoS Attacks: Apache Killer Threat

Apache, the open-source Web server, is the most popular Web server on the planet. It's also as safe as safe can be. Well, usually it is. An old, unfixed security hole has come back to haunt the Apache webmasters in the form of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack tool: Apache Killer. . You may have already heard about this, and ignored it. I mean, in a world where every day brings a new security hole announcement but the Web keeps working anyway, many people have taken to a "Who cares" attitude. That's usually a mistake. North Korean DDoS Attacks: March 2023 Examination and Future Risks

The cyber attacks that paralyzed a handful of major South Korean websites earlier this year were almost certainly carried out by North Korea or parties allied with the country, computer security company McAfee said Tuesday in a report.. The company's analysis, carried out with the help of the South Korean and U.S. governments, is one of the most thorough yet published on the March attacks, and details how they were carried out, and why they were so difficult to counter. In investigating the incident, the report draws clear parallels with a similar attack that knocked South Korean and U.S. websites offline in 2009 and comes to an unsettling conclusion: the attacks were likely designed to test South Korea's cyber defense and response, and could be the prelude of a much larger attack in the future. Trojan.Jnanabot Attack: Linux And Mac DDoS Threats Explained

From the department of cosmic justice comes this gem, spotted by researchers from Symantec: a trojan that targets Windows, Mac, and Linux computers contains gaping security vulnerabilities that allow rival criminal gangs to commandeer the infected machines.. Known as Trojan.Jnanabot, or alternately as OSX/Koobface.A or trojan.osx.boonana.a, the bot made waves in October when researchers discovered its Java-based makeup allowed it to attack Mac and Linux machines, not just Windows PCs as is the case with most malware. Once installed, the trojan components are stored in an invisible folder and use strong encryption to keep communications private. The bot can force its host to take instructions through internet relay chat, perform DDoS attacks, and post fraudulent messages to the victim's Facebook account, among other things. Mitchell Frost Indicted For DDoS Attacks On Conservative Sites

Think this guy's a democrat? A former college student has been charged with using the school's computer network to control a botnet and launch distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against conservative websites belonging to Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter and Rudy Giuliani. . Mitchell Frost, 22, of Bellevue, Ohio was charged Friday with one count each of damaging a protected computer system and possessing unauthorized access devices, according to the U. S. attorney's office for the Northern District of Ohio. While enrolled as an undergrad at the University of Akron in Ohio, Frost used the school's computer network to establish a botnet of compromised computers across the United States and other countries, prosecutors said. According to an indictment, Frost scanned the internet searching for vulnerable computer networks to access and gain control over. Frost then used the botnet to initiate DDoS attacks that temporarily interrupted the operation of www.billoreilly.com, and , prosecutors said. The DDoS attacks caused each website to be knocked offline, resulting in damages exceeding $5,000. The link for this article located at SC Magazine is no longer available. . Cyber-Attacks: Government And Business Threats Overview

Cyber-attack is an ever-present threat that can result in major damage to government and business web sites, as the following examples show. U.S. and South Korea, 2009: Officials in both countries reported attacks in the summer, aimed mainly at government web sites, as well as financial services sites.. How it happened: The perpetrators used a virus to infect computers, enlisting hundreds of thousands of unwitting computer users in several countries to launch distributed-denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks, which overwhelmed targeted web sites. Suspects: U.S. and South Korean officials linked the attack to North Korea, but no evidence was ever presented. Some cyber-security experts scoffed at the allegations, saying that even if true, it would be nearly impossible to definitely trace the attacks to North Korea, since a sophisticated attacker could make it seem as if they originated from almost anywhere.
