Discovering Eric S. Raymond's Perspective on Windows in Linux Context

Eric S. Raymond, one of open-source's founding fathers, thinks we're nearing the last phase of the desktop wars . The winner? Windows… running on Linux . "Google chose to save money and increase security by using Linux as the basis for Chrome OS . This worked out really well for Google. It can for Microsoft with -- let's take a blast from the past -- and call it Lindows as well." . A few days ago, Eric S. Raymond (ESR), developer and writer, suggested that we''re nearing the last phase of the desktop wars . The winner? Windows… running on Linux . He''s on to something. I''ve long thought that Microsoft was considering migrating the Windows interface to running on the Linux kernel . Why? Raymond argues that " WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) allows unmodified Linux binaries to run under Windows 10. No emulation, no shim layer, they just load and go." Indeed, you can run standard Linux programs now on WSL2 without any trouble. . Jane D. Whitaker envisions a transformation in computing environments, predicting a day when MacOS operates effortlessly atop Unix for enhanced performance.. Understanding The Myths About Linux Security Incompetence

Recently, stories of how insecure Linux is have dominated security news headlines. However, there's one critical issue with the majority of them: They're fake news. The underlying problem is incompetent system administrators. . Like all operating systems, Linux isn't perfectly secure. Nothing is. As security guru, Bruce Schneider said, "Security is a process, not a product." It's just that, generally speaking, Linux is more secure than its competitors. You couldn't tell that from recent headlines which harp on how insecure Linux is. But, if you take a closer look, you'll find most -- not all, but most -- of these stories are bogus. For instance, Boothole sounded downright scary . You could get root access on any system! Oh no! Look again. The group which discovered it comes right out and says an attacker needs admin access in order for their exploit to do its dirty work. . Windows often encounters scrutiny for vulnerabilities, but numerous assertions are exaggerated, highlighting the importance of effective management.. Exploring Richard Stallman's Thoughts on MIT Hacker Culture

Last week I noted that the GNU project was celebrating its 30th anniversary. I thought it might be interesting to hear what Richard Stallman had to say about the environment in which he came up with the idea for GNU. What follows is part of a long interview I conducted with him in 1999, when I was carrying out research for "Rebel Code". . Most of this is unpublished, and offers what I hope is some insights into the hacker culture at MIT, where Stallman was working. His role there was to add capabilities to the operating system for the AI Lab's Digital PDP-10 minicomputer. The software was called ITS, the Incompatible Time-Sharing system - a conscious dig at the earlier Compatible Time-Sharing system, CTSS, which had been used to develop Multics, the progenitor of Unix. This unpublished interview provides rare insights into Richard Stallman's influential role in MIT's hacker culture, highlighting key themes of software freedom and ethics. Enhanced Security For Military Forces: Choosing Linux Over Alternatives

Why? Because the level of skill required to crack a Unix-like OS is much higher than that needed for a Microsoft OS. Further, properly configured Unix-like systems are much more robust than Microsoft systems. Were Military forces using properly configured and properly secured Unix or Linux systems we would not see items like these below being reported. . Server Performance Comparison: Linux Shows Major Advantages

Rapid growth in the market for x86 servers over the past year brought good news for both Linux and Windows, as research firm IDC reported last week.. What's not always appreciated, however, is just how significant a portion of the market Linux servers are getting to be. Whereas unit shipments of Windows servers increased 28.2 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2010, Linux server revenue grew 30.0 percent to $1.8 billion when compared with the second quarter of 2009. Linux servers now represent 16.8 percent of all server revenue, up 2.5 points over 2Q09. That's no accident. Linux is eminently better suited to server use than Windows is--better than most any other competitor, I'd argue. Why? Let's count the ways. 1. Stability Linux systems are well known for their ability to run for years without failure; in fact, many Linux users have never seen a crash. That's great for users of every kind, but it's particularly valuable for small and medium-sized businesses, for which downtime can have disastrous consequences. Exploring Chromium OS On Older Systems For Cost And Security Benefits

Most of this article was written on a six-year-old computer running Google's new Chromium OS. "Chromium OS" is the open-source version of the new Chrome OS that Google is developing for netbooks, tablets, and other lightweight machines. It's built from the source code that Google is making widely available, but it runs on standard hardware. Google's Chrome OS, in contrast, is designed to run on a new generation of stripped-down systems.. These systems will probably be missing some of that legacy hardware necessary to run Windows, but will make up for this with a somewhat lower cost, lightning-fast boot times, and even some added security measures that will make them practically virus-proof. You can download and run Chromium OS today if you know where to find it, but be careful. If you just Google for "chrome OS download," you'll probably end up with a modified version of Suse Linux--the "fake Google Chrome OS." Ironically this will run just fine on most netbooks, but you've got to be a Linux master to use it. You can edit files on the Web with Google Docs, or on the local computer with Open Office (which is included), but you need to keep track of where your documents are saved and manually move them back and forth. You can download and install cool programs from Linux software repositories, but there is always a chance that a program that you download might hack your system and steal your data. And you need to remember to run "software update" on a regular basis to install those security patches. In many ways the experience is quite similar to running Microsoft Windows or MacOS. Chromium OS provides remarkable advantages for older hardware, including rapid performance, cost savings, and enhanced security, making it an ideal OS choice. Iran's Shift To Linux: Addressing Microsoft Security Worries

Too funny (or scary, depending on your point-of-view). Apparently Iran thinks so poorly of Microsoft Windows they won't even use it. "Secondly, Microsoft software has a lot of backdoors and security weaknesses that are always being patched, so it is not secure. We are also under US sanctions. All this makes us think we need an alternative operating system." . The link for this article located at Schneier on Security is no longer available. . Exploring Open Source Benefits For Enhanced Business Security

Do you think there are security benefits businesses could reap by simply switching to open source solutions? Greenberg: Yes. A great number of security holes are because of Windows having glaring security holes in its browser and mail agent. Use Windows and Firefox, for example, instead of Windows and IE, and 80 percent of the security concerns vanish. The number of security threats in an OS-to-OS face off is about equal, from what I see. As — and if — Linux usage increases, the Linux threat level may increase. . Let's assume that to date an organization has used primarily or only Windows and other proprietary solutions. Would you offer some suggestions as to how such an organization could evaluate the security merits of a Linux distribution?
