The push towards egovernment in the US is being hindered by the use of various encryption technologies in different government agencies. According to a new report released by the General Accounting Office (GAO), the US government has to ensure the security of egovernment through the use of public key infrastructure (PKI) technologies.

Unfortunately, most PKI products are not interoperable and this problem needs to be addressed before egovernment services can be widely offered, as government agencies will need to have a common PKI system.

The report also says that the expense of introducing PKIs may scare off many government agencies operating within tight financial constraints
