The Royal Mail, Britain's postal service, is to offer free digital signatures to all citizens in a bid to improve consumer acceptance of e-business. From later this year, consumers will be able to collect software on a free CD-ROM from any of 12,000 post offices, or download it from the Web, and obtain a free digital signature from startup UK Smart. The signature can then be used to authenticate the user's identity when making online transactions, either from their own PCs or on Internet kiosks being installed in post offices.
