This paper is designed to provide HSPs with an understanding of the business case for value added services and presents the rationale for offering SSL acceleration services to hosting service customers. Included are ROI (return on investment) indicators, marketing tips and implementation requirements. Because the numbers in this paper reflect an implementation for larger enterprise customers, HSPs that target small to medium-sized business customers should adjust the numbers to fit the appropriate audience.

By 2004, e-commerce is expected to grow to be a $6.8 trillion industry (Forrester Research, 2000). The consumer benefits of this growth are 24-hour access to product information and a broader offering of goods and services under favorable pricing terms. In addition to consumer benefits, a business benefit is realized in the form of a broader customer base and reduced operating costs. While these benefits are clear, however, the rapid growth of e-business poses a number of technological challenges.
