A report by Internet statistics outfit Telegeography says that 80% of the Internet traffic emanating from Asia, Africa and South America is routed through the US, which means that an email sent from someone in Grabouw (that's if they have email in Grabouw) to someone in Rio de Janeiro would not go there direct - it would be passed through a hub in either California or Virginia first. This, for rather obvious reasons, is a problem. What it means is that the rest of the world is being subjected to the legal and moral standards of either Virginia or California, because if the good folks in Richmond, Fairfax or Los Angeles don't appreciate pictures of naked people playing with their naughty bits, your email to your mate in Rio containing holiday snaps of yourself and the wife could land you in a dark hole filled with ex-dotcommers, murderers and other assorted losers.
