Australian consumers supported electronic health records but the healthcare sector was ignoring their expectations, an industry conference has heard. "Consumer expectations of these e-health schemes tends to be the last consideration," according to Amanda Cornwall, complaints and quality project manager at the NSW healthcare Complaints Commission.

"It is not designed in. Generally, consumer expectations are regarded as being privacy problems, so what they expect is regarded as an obstacle." Ms Cornwall was speaking as part of an Australian perspectives panel at the inaugural Towards a Health e-Nation conference on the NSW Central Coast last week.

She said consumers were concerned about the accuracy of electronic medical records and wanted control of their personal information.
