Securing Open Wireless Networks: Risks And Effective Protection Strategies

Business owners don't walk away from their buildings at night and leave the doors wide open. But quite a few are doing something that could become nearly as dangerous: Leaving wireless networks wide open to anyone passing by with a portable computer and less than $100 worth of hardware needed to connect to the system. "We do our war driving and we still come across access points that are not encrypted," says Keith D'Sousa, a senior manager of risk and advisory services at consulting firm KPMG LLP in Toronto. War driving involves touring cities with equipment that can sniff out a company's unprotected wireless network access points. It's a hobby of security consultants and, more frightening, computer hackers and people looking for free Internet access. The fact that it still turns up lots of open doors into corporate networks shows many businesses still aren't paying enough attention to wireless local-area network (LAN) security. And after suffering through the Love Bugs and Code Reds of e-mail, the growth of mobile wireless raises the question of whether businesses have learned their lessons for this second round. So far, experts say, not really. But the final test may still be a few years away. "When we have our first big wireless security incident, you'll suddenly start to see people wonder," says James Lewis, director of technology and public policy programs at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. "Will the convenience of wireless start to outweigh the security risks?" Much of the focus has concentrated on wireless local area networks that businesses use to connect their desktops across campuses. The transmission standards have holes that can virtually announce themselves to nearby hackers sporting equipment they bought from the neighborhood electronics stores and software they found for free over the Internet. But standards groups are working on plugging those holes - just in time for the threat of the more wily mobile devices to loom. The link for this article located at Technews is no longer available. . Defending Your Home Office Against Cyber Threats and Hackers

Even if you run your business from a spare bedroom, hackers and computer pranksters from around the world are probably trying to break into your computer systems. Sound implausible? Well, it's not. Some may simply send a virus on the Internet that will debilitate your computer systems. Others may break into your network to scour your computer records for valuable information on your customers, including social security, credit card, and bank account numbers. I never considered the possibility that my personal finance Website for women, might attract the interest of hackers, until the Chinese language edition of Elle magazine ran a small article on it. Then I watched in amazement as traffic to my site poured in from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Now, don't get me wrong, I like publicity as much as anyone does, but I was concerned my site might be in jeopardy. Several weeks earlier, I heard a report on National Public Radio that Chinese techies might retaliate for the April 1 collision between a U.S. spy plane and Chinese fighter jet off the coast of China, which caused the Chinese plane to crash and the death of its pilot.
