Linus Torvalds, the founder of Linux and the father of open-source software, sat down with ZDNet to talk about the state of Linux today and how AI figures into its future. . Torvalds believes that AI will only continue to become more important as time progresses. He believes that "all of us can see what happens when you have a system that is not very well controlled, and it gets out of hand." He also said that he believes we need to manage these systems better because they are so important. He also discussed how open-source communities can help improve AI development. He said that "the open source community has been very helpful in improving the quality of AI technology" because they can come together and share information with one another. Learn what else Torvalds had to say about the future of Linux in the article linked below. . Alex asserts that the role of AI will expand, highlighting enhanced management and the significance of collaboration within software development teams.. Public source code repositories, from Sourceforge to GitHub , from the Linux Kernel Archives to ReactOS.org , from PHP Packagist to the Python Package Index , better known as PyPI , are a fantastic source (sorry!) of free operating systems, applications, programming libraries, and developers’ toolkits that have done computer science and software engineering a world of good. . Most software projects need “helper” code that isn’t a fundamental part of the problem that the project itself is trying to solve, such as utility functions for writing to the system log, producing colourful output, uploading status reports to a web service, creating backup archives of old data, and so on. In cases like that, you can save time (and benefit for free from other people’s expertise) by searching for a package that already exists in one of the many available repositories, and hooking that external package into your own tree of source code. In the other direction, if you’re working on a project of your own that includes some useful utilities you couldn’t find anywhere else, you might feel inclined to offer something to the community in return by packaging up your code and making it available for free to everyone else. . GitHub has announced that their Advisory Database for security data is now open to contributions from experts. The full contents of the Advisory Database have already been published to encourage collaboration. . GitHub senior product manager Kate Catlin explained that the company has teams of security researchers that review all changes and help keep security advisories up to date. But with the amount of new vulnerabilities and different attack vectors emerging each day, the company believes members of its community may be able to share additional insights and intelligence on CVEs. . I was talking last week to my friend HD Moore who founded and leads the development team for Metasploit at Rapid7. He told me about yet another open source project that Rapid7 has been supporting with financial and engineering support. The venerable John-the-Ripper password cracking project has been the recipient of support from Rapid7 for about a year now, culminating in the latest release which was recently announced. . John-the-Ripper which is the standard in the security/password cracking world, is part of Openwall. There are actually quite a number of open source security projects under the Openwall umbrella. Openwall itself is the granddaddy of security Linux distributions. Many of today's "secure" Linux distributions like SELinux and EnGarde have some of the Openwall DNA. But in addition, Openwall also handles things like crypt blowfish, the popular password hashing algorithm and many other open source security projects. The news of Rapid7's support was also announced on the Rapid7 community boards last week as well. Rapid7 has developed a history of supporting open source security projects. It gave a home to HD Moore and the Metasploit team about 2 years ago. Since then Rapid7 has also begun to sell the Metasploit Pro commercial product based on the open source Metasploit project. To their credit they have also continued to develop and distribute a robust open source version of the product as well. . "Joomla is already scaling to some of the world . "Our learnings will be valuable to the community." Ryan Ozimek agrees that Bay will have a lot to teach the community about enterprise integration. It isn't clear if they are also contributing money. Ratzesberger wouldn't comment, but my sense was, not so much. eBay did pick up the tab for hosting a regional users's group meeting. Paying for a party is a lot like making a donation, I always say. Ratzesberger wasn't sure yet how much code eBay might contribute back to the group, as the project is still on the planning stages. . One of the oldest Unix-like operating systems, FreeBSD, continues its advancement with the sixth release in the FreeBSD-5 series. Its developers have added nothing major, but have made many modifications, fixing a number of problems introduced in previous releases. FreeBSD 5.4 is the best release since 5.1, but it still may not be ready for prime time. . FreeBSD is a complete, multi-platform, Unix-like operating system developed by a large community of developers. As with GNU/Linux, you can make FreeBSD into a server or a desktop operating system. FreeBSD handles software management through two frameworks: the package database, which contains precompiled software packages, and the Ports tree, which contains metadata that allows you to automatically download and compile programs from source code. There are more than 12,000 programs in the Ports tree. Users can install packages easily from the command line, from an ncurses-based utility called sysinstall, or through "distribution sets" designed to install several packages together. The Linux community has lost a great friend and advocate. In addition to maintaining the LSPH all these years Mike was also a Navy Sonar Instructor, Reserve Police Officer, President and founding member of TSCNet, Treasurer and founding member of the Kitsap Peninsula Linux User Group and contributor to various Open Source projects such as the PHP SNMP module and the Sharp Camera package for OpenZaurus. You may notice that the last update of the Linux Shadow Password HOWTO was v1.5, 7 April 1998. This isn't because he lost interest, but because the HOWTO did its job. It convinced everyone to start including shadow password support in their distribution by default, making the HOWTO unnecessary.
