South Korean cybersecurity firm AhnLab Security Emergency Response Center said it has observed a new Linux malware in the wild that deploys a cryptocurrency miner on infiltrated systems using a shell script compiler downloader, reports The Hacker News. According to the report, a successful breach will be followed by execution of the shc downloader malware to fetch the XMRig cryptocurrency miner software and a Perl-based DDoS IRC Bot that allows the attacker to connect through a remote server and proceed to mount distributed denial-of-service attacks. . "It is presumed that after successful authentication through a dictionary attack on inadequately managed Linux SSH servers, various malware were installed on the target system. This bot supports not only DDoS attacks such as TCP flood, UDP flood, and HTTP flood, but various other features including command execution, reverse shell, port scanning, and log deletion," researchers said. Recent findings indicate a new strain of Linux malware that installs a cryptocurrency miner and initiates DDoS attacks following SSH compromises, preying on inadequately protected servers.. Cybersecurity researchers have spotted a new Linux malware downloader that targets poorly defended Linux servers with cryptocurrency miners and DDoS IRC bots. . Researchers from ASEC discovered the attack after the Shell Script Compiler (SHC) used to create the downloader was uploaded to VirusTotal. Apparently, Korean users were the ones uploading the SHC, and it’s Korean users who are targets, as well. Further analysis has shown that the threat actors are going after poorly defended Linux servers, brute-forcing their way into administrator accounts over SSH. . Experts have identified a novel threat involving malicious payloads that inundate Unix-based systems with cryptojackers and distributed denial-of-service agents.. A new Linux malware developed using the shell script compiler has been observed deploying a cryptocurrency miner on compromised systems. . "It is presumed that after successful authentication through a dictionary attack on inadequately managed Linux SSH servers, various malware were installed on the target system," AhnLab Security Emergency Response Center (ASEC) said in a report published today. shc allows shell scripts to be converted directly into binaries, offering protections against unauthorized source code modifications. It's analogous to the BAT2EXE utility in Windows that's used to convert any batch file to an executable. In an attack chain detailed by the South Korean cybersecurity firm, a successful compromise of the SSH server leads to the deployment of an shc downloader malware along with a Perl-based DDoS IRC Bot. A new stealthy Linux malware known as Shikitega has been discovered infecting computers and IoT devices with additional payloads. . The malware exploits vulnerabilities to elevate its privileges, adds persistence on the host via crontab, and eventually launches a cryptocurrency miner on infected devices. Shikitega is quite stealthy, managing to evade anti-virus detection using a polymorphic encoder that makes static, signature-based detection impossible. . Shikitega Linux malware escalates access rights, maintains presence on systems, and secretly installs cryptocurrency mining software..
