Exploring Extreme Hacks and Their Influence on Cybersecurity Risks

Any device with a computer chip can be hacked, but not all hacks are created equal. In fact, in a world where tens of millions of computers are compromised by malware every year and nearly every company's network is owned, truly innovative or thought-provoking hacks are few and far between. . These extreme hacks rise above the unending morass of everyday, humdrum hacks because of what they target or because they employ previously unknown, unused, or advanced methods. They push the limit of what we security pros previously thought possible, opening our eyes to new threats and systemic vulnerabilities, all while earning the begrudging respect of those who fight malicious hackers. Mass Data Collection Report: 15 Million Gmail Addresses Exposed

In his blog, a student from the University of Amsterdam reports that he gathered around 15 million Gmail addresses from Google user profiles within a month. Matthijs Koot analysed just under 35 million profile links from Google's profile site map, which is easily accessible on the company's servers. . Koot says he used the same IP address for all of the 35 million queries, but Google didn't attempt to stop the mass download. A Google spokesperson told British IT news source The Register that the site map does not make any information available that is not already publicly accessible. The site map contains URLs to more than 7,100 text files with 5,000 profile links each. Defcon Survey Identifies Cloud As A Prime Target For Hackers

Is the cloud a hacker's paradise? A survey at last month's Defcon hacking conference paints that picture. Sponsored by security vendor Fortify Software, the survey asked 100 hackers who attended Defcon about security in the cloud.. A sizable 96 percent said they believe the cloud opens up more hacking opportunities, while 89 percent said cloud vendors aren't doing enough to address cybersecurity issues. Among the hackers surveyed, 45 percent said they had already tried to exploit vulnerabilities in the cloud. Although only 12 percent admitted to hacking into cloud systems for the money, that's still a significant percentage to ponder for companies moving to the cloud, according to Fortify. A Gartner study from earlier this year found that by 2012, 20 percent of businesses will own no back-end IT assets of their own, planning instead to store everything all in the cloud. The link for this article located at CNET is no longer available. . An impressive 94% think the cloud presents enhanced cyber attack risks, whereas 87% are concerned that providers do not ensure adequate protections..
