But the Zone-H website, which keeps a record of hacking attacks and inadvertently found itself as the scorekeeper of the competition, criticised media interest in the challenge. In October 2001, Linux Defacement Rates Surpass Those Of Windows

Linux was defaced 670 times (36.69%) against Windows 625 times (34.23%). This is very rare and you might wonder why. At the 24th of September an advisory was released from twlc.net about a new PHPNuke bug which affects all PHPNuke versions on all platforms basicly. PHPNuke is mostly ran on linux though. This is the most likely cause that the Linux defacements have gone up this month, I strongly doubt this "trend" will continue next month. According to the daily defacement graphics we can see that at the 5th of October the daily defacements went up from around 30 to 80 defacements / day. Perhaps this exploit and possible howto reached the defacement scene at that point. The link for this article located at Alldas.de is no longer available. . Attrition.org, a Web site that leaped into world fame for its mirror defacement section, went through a couple of eventful moments this year. The first occasion was one of its own making, with the decision to discontinue the presentation of mirrors, which was announced last May (you can read an interview on the subject here). And then, last Saturday (July, 28), came Attrition's second big moment when a group or an individual agent known as Fluffly Bunny defaced Attrition itself, to everybody's surprise. On the other hand, Fluffly Bunny has also acquired a name for him/herself in the underground with his/her daring acts, as recently, when he or she or they defaced the Web sites of SANS Institute and SourceForge, among others, and badly damaged Apache.org servers. Brian Martin, one of the founding fathers of Attrition and a member of its current three-person-crew, kindly agreed to speak about Bunny's attack in an interview given in trust to InfoGuerra, a site that is based in Brazil and keeps track of worldwide aspects of safety and privacy in the Net. SANS Institute Defacement Report: Procedural Errors Exposed

Procedural mistakes, and not some new security bug, were likely the cause of the defacement last week of the Web site of the SANS Institute, according to sources close to the organization. Procedural mistakes, and not some new security bug, were likely the cause of the defacement last week of the Web site of the SANS Institute, according to sources close to the organization. The computer security research and education group restored its Web site Sunday evening, after its home page was replaced Friday by an attacker using the name "Fluffi Bunni." The defaced page included a photo of a pink stuffed rabbit in front of a computer. On the screen of the monitor read a message, "Would you really trust these guys to teach you security?" Sources close to SANS told Newsbytes that the forensic analysis of the defacement is focused on custom CGI scripts or other code at the site that provides special features. Such scripts have caused security lapses in the past at the site, according to one insider. All of the scripts, including one that drives the site's search engine, have been disabled as a precaution.
