In response to HBGary Federal's proclamation that it knew who the leaders of Anonymous were, the hacker group stole thousands of private emails and took over the website with a letter explaining everything. Exploring LOIC: A Key Tool Behind DDoS Attacks in Cyber Activism

How was it that a loosely-coupled group of cyber-protestors could launch -- with varying degrees of success -- targeted distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against sites such as MasterCard, PayPal, PostFinance, and the website belonging to a Swedish prosecutor?. Turns out it's quite simple. All an attacker need do is download the open source network stress testing tool known as LOIC (the Low Orbit Ion Cannon) that is widely available. Launching an attack with LOIC is mind-numbingly easy: just point and shoot. LOIC will then flood the target with HTTP requests, UDP and TCP packets. Those participating in the pro-Wikileaks riots could operate on their own, or choose to connect their system to the "LOIC Hivemind" voluntary botnet that is centrally controlled by those behind Operation Payback. Since the launch of the attacks, LOIC has been downloaded nearly 70,000 times. Cyber protestors engaging in digital rioting such as web-site defacements, and denial-of-service attacks, and even inserting messages in malware have existed for some time. Such attacks being highly connected isn't new, either. They have been socializing on message boards and instantly c The link for this article located at CSO Online is no longer available. . Exploring Hacktivism's Role In Human Rights And Censorship Resistance

Hacktivism isn't found in the graffiti on defaced Web pages, in e-mail viruses bearing political screeds or in smug take-downs of government or organizational networks. Hacktivism isn't found in the graffiti on defaced Web pages, in e-mail viruses bearing political screeds or in smug take-downs of government or organizational networks. These sorts of activities are nothing more than reverse censorship and "the same old cheap hacks elevated to political protest," according to Cult of the Dead Cow member Oxblood Ruffin. Hacktivism, as defined by the Cult of the Dead Cow, the group of hackers and artists who coined the phrase, was intended to refer to the development and use of technology to foster human rights and the open exchange of information. Speaking this past weekend at the Hackers on Planet Earth gathering, Ruffin pointed to the growing partnership against censorship between hackers, human rights activists and the academic community as proof that real hacktivism -- grass-roots resistance enabled by technology -- is a viable way to battle repression. A new TV public service announcement targets U.S. computer hacktivists with a blunt message: Uncle Sam wants you to help fight the war on terrorism. But the spot, which organizers hope to begin airing nationwide next week on major networks, will warn that misguided patriotic efforts from software experts can hurt the cause. "Computer attacks and hate speech do not contribute in any constructive way to dealing with the many problems our global civilization faces," said WorldCom senior vice president Vinton Cerf, who is scheduled to appear in the televised announcement. Understanding Hacktivism Myths and Cyber Threats in Digital Activism

Hacktivism is a bastardization of the words hack and activism. In truth, it's neither. Rather, it has become a cheapjack pseudo-politically hip moniker for the activities of apolitical teenage miscreants devoid of talent, creativity and passion. The recent blast of media hype warning of a massive May Day digital attack is drawn from the dicey politics and twisted syntax of strained U.S.-Chinese relations. The alleged hacker activity supposedly emanates from the incident in which a Chinese fighter jock clipped a U.S. spy plane, sending the fighter pilot looking for the lost continent of Atlantis and our plane on an unscheduled island sight-seeing tour. Even the FBI bought the hype, issuing a dire warning to businesses to be on high alert for an increase of Web site attacks. The link for this article located at ZDNet is no longer available. . Hacktivism: The Ascendancy of Digital Political Protest

Hacktivists have officially moved from nerdish extremists to become the political protest visionaries of the digital age, a meeting at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London will be told on Thursday. Paul Mobbs, an experienced Internet activist and anti-capitalist protestor, will tell attendees that the techniques used by politically minded computer hackers -- from jamming corporate networks and sending email viruses to defacing Web sites -- has moved into the realm of political campaigning. Mobbs says that the term "Hacktivism" has been adopted by so many different groups, from peaceful Net campaigners to Internet hate groups, that it is essentially meaningless, but claims that Internet protest is here to stay. "It has a place, whether people like it or not," says Mobbs. The link for this article located at ZDNet UK is no longer available. .
