With more than 47 million domain names under management, GoDaddy has a huge DNS infrastructure that it has upgraded to support the emerging Internet security standard known as DNSSEC for DNS Security Extensions.. GoDaddy's year-long engineering effort to prepare for DNSSEC is significant given that the Internet's most popular domain -- .com - will support DNSSEC by the end of March, according to .com operator Verisign. DNSSEC is an emerging Internet standard that allows Web sites to verify their domain names and corresponding IP addresses using digital signatures and public-key encryption. DNSSEC prevents Kaminsky-style attacks, where traffic is redirected from a legitimate Web site to a fake one without the Web site operator or end user knowing. Use of the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) specifications for securing domain names increased by 340% from 2009 to 2010. Even so, only 0.02% of Internet zones are now being signed with DNSSEC, and 23% of those are using expired signatures.. Those results come from a new study released by networking automation vendor InfoBlox and Internet testing and monitoring tool vendor the Measurement Factory. While all Internet traffic -- browsing, checking email or conducting e-commerce transactions -- gets routed through domain name servers, the study found that organizations are doing little to safeguard those servers against attacks or outages. "This year's survey results -- along with recent related outages like those experienced by Rollingstone.com and Comcast -- should represent a huge wakeup call for any organization with an Internet presence," said Cricket Liu, VP of architecture at Infoblox, in a statement. VeriSign has announced the rollout of its cloud-based DNSSec Signing Service for registrars, which allows DNSSec provisions to be added to second-level domain names. Pat Kane, assistant general manager of naming services at VeriSign, told V3.co.uk that progress being made is at the registry and root levels. . "Root signing is key to building a safer infrastructure and the real heavy lifting on that is done by the registrars. Today we've begun to enable the tools to help registrars meet the demands of their customers," he said. More and more domains are signing up to DNSSec, Kane added, including full integration with .edu. Registrars will be able to evaluate the service until the end of next year. DNSSec provides a better level of security that existing provisions and is useful at thwarting man-in-the-middle and cache poisoning attacks. . At the end of last week, US company VeriSign announced the roll-out schedule for the authentication of.com and .net zones. From the 9th of December, .net domains are to be authenticated via keys that are based on the new DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) protocol and stored in the Domain Name System (DNS). . Responses that don't originate from the server that was authorised for a domain will be detected when signatures are validated. Signatures for .net domains have been available since the 29th of October, but they cannot be validated yet. Signatures for the .com zone are to follow in March; users will be able to protect their own .com domains with DNSSEC signatures shortly afterwards. This is mainly designed to prevent future cache-poisoning attacks. The link for this article located at H Security is no longer available. . Comcast has begun migrating its customers to a new Internet security mechanism that will help protect them from being inadvertently routed to phony Web pages for pharming attacks, identity theft and other scams.. Comcast is the first major ISP in the United States to adopt the new mechanism, which is known as DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC). DNSSEC is an emerging Internet standard that prevents hackers from hijacking Web traffic and redirecting it to bogus sites by allowing web sites to verify their domain names and corresponding IP addresses using digital signatures and public-key encryption. The Domain Name System (DNS) plays a critical part in Internet communications, as it's used to translate a human-readable computer hostname into an IP address -- such as searchsecurity.co.uk to 65.214.43.49 -- so that it can be understood and used by networking equipment, computers and software programs. . It's the world's largest distributed database, but when it was originally designed back in 1984, scalability and availability were the key goals and little attention was given to security. This lack of security has lead to a series of DNS-related vulnerabilities. For example, if attackers can change your DNS zone data -- the DNS namespace for which you're administratively responsible -- they can set up counterfeit Web servers, or cause email to be redirected to other servers. Cybercriminals are increasingly using false DNS servers to intercept legitimate Web addresses and redirect users to fake sites in order to capture personal information or install malware. A fix for the critical shortcomings of DNS server security has been a long time coming, in large part due to the problem of maintaining backwards compatibility. But Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) has finally been rolled out, and this new security layer is a major step towards a more secure Web address The link for this article located at Search Security is no longer available. . The Internet is set to get a whole lot safer, the security standard DNSSEC is set to be assigned to the Internet's 13 root servers from later today.. It makes the end of a long trail; DNSSEC has been some years in its implementation yet has still failed to penetrate the wider market, despite the efforts of IETF, the Internet registries and the US government. Naming registry ICANN has been working with Verisign and the US department of commerce for some time to make DNSSEC a more integrated part of the Internet infrastructure. ICANN's DNS director, Joe Abley, said that the rollout of DNSSEC to the root servers had been a long one. "We Started rolling it since January - it's a slow rollout,. We've taken 6 months to do this - it's not like in enterprises where you trial something and go live next week. The link for this article located at Network World is no longer available. .
