A new phishing scam capitalizes on the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to trick Airbnb customers into sharing personal and financial data, Redscan reports. The scale of the campaign is unknown, though it likely targets email addresses taken from the open Web.. Targets receive an email designed to appear as though it's from Airbnb, addressing them as a host of the service. The message says hosts can't accept new bookings or contact potential gusts until they accept a new privacy policy. Avinti, a developer of proactive e-mail security solutions, has issued a security alert about a new e-mail attack that disguises malicious code behind a seemingly harmless e-greeting. Is this just another one of theses attacks which tries to trick users in downloading a virus? What I found interesting that the articles states that theses types of emails should not be considered Spam. What do you think? This also brings up the question should spam filter's try to block theses emails or is it the responsibly of anti-virus software? . "Clicking on the Web site address link in the e-mail triggers an installation of one or two files on the user's machine, designed to capture user data. There is no user intervention required; the download is automatic," said Dave Green, Avinti's CTO. "The e-mail appears as plain text but most e-mail clients pick up the plain-text URL and highlight it for the user to click on," he added. "So the e-mail, as plain text, will pass through other antivirus (AV) gateways completely undetected. In case the Web address doesn't get highlighted, the e-mail also encourages users to copy and paste the URL into their browser." The link for this article located at tmcnet is no longer available. . Hackers and spammers have "raised their onslaught" with two global email-borne virus attacks launched in December and January. The attacks were so large that they drove up the level of viruses up by a factor of 20 compared with usual activity, according to data from security firm Postini. . The January attack became known as the Storm worm because the original email subject line was '230 dead as storm batters Europe'. At the time of the email, there was a heavy storm occurring in Europe. Though botnets have caused a large volume of junk email in recent months, security researchers are more alarmed at the rise in their level of sophistication, warning that targeted phishing attacks are making their way into corporate email servers. "They've reached a level of sophistication that we usually associate with commercial grade products," said Mark Sunner, chief security analyst at MessageLabs in New York. "We've seen the activity change and now botnets are spammed out in discrete chunks." In November, the global amount of spam in email traffic grew to nearly 90% of all global email traffic, according to statistics kept by MessageLabs. And that percentage is expected to hold in December. In addition, the vendor reported that 1 in 200 emails contained some type of phishing attack. MessageLabs said more than 68% of all malicious emails intercepted recently have been phishing attacks, a steady increase over the previous months. . Security researchers predict 2007 will be a year in which the level of sophisticated attacks grows to alarming levels. The bad guys are beginning to comb through social networking Web sites such as MySpace and others, said Sunner, and pull out addresses, zip codes and other identifying data to make a phishing email seem genuine to a victim.
