NTRU: New Standard in Public-Key Encryption for Financial Transactions

Here comes the fastest public-key algorithm that most people have never heard of: It's called NTRUEncrypt and this month was approved by the financial services standards body, the Accredited Standards Committee X9. . The X9.98 standard specifies how to use NTRU, as it's called for short, in financial transactions. "The NTRU public-key algorithm competes with RSA and elliptic curve" says Ed Adams, CEO of Security Innovation, which owns the rights and patents associated with the NTRU algorithm. It was invented in the mid-1990s. Unlike RSA, NTRU is not widely used, and in fact the NTRU cryptosystem needed changes early on to improve its security by addressing weaknesses and performance. But today NTRU is recognized as faster than the widely used RSA algorithm. The link for this article located at Network World is no longer available. . Triple DES ATM Upgrade: New Cybersecurity Threats Have Emerged

In a press release today, Redspin, an independent auditing firm based in Carpinteria, CA, suggests that the recent mandated upgrades of ATMs to support triple DES encryption of PINs has introduced new vulnerabilities into the ATM network environment - because of other changes that were typically made concurrently with the triple DES upgrades. . Significant Upgrade to WPA2: Wireless Security Enhancement

The Wi-Fi Alliance says WPA2 is a big improvement on earlier wireless security standards, such as Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), which hackers have found easy to circumvent. The Wi-Fi Alliance says WPA2 is a big improvement on earlier wireless security standards, such as Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), which hackers have found easy to circumvent. It includes Advanced Encryption Standard, which supports 128-bit, 192-bit and 256-bit keys. Because WPA2 is compatible with WPA, companies that have already implemented WPA can upgrade to the new standard in stages. "WPA2 is ideally suited for enterprises in both the public and private sectors," said Frank Hanzlik, Wi-Fi Alliance managing director. "Products that are certified for WPA2 give IT managers the assurance that the technology meets interoperability standards and in turn helps them manage support and deployment costs." . WPA3 represents a major leap in wireless security protocols, offering improved safeguards compared to prior technologies such as WPA2.. Wi-Fi Standards,WPA2 Security,Wireless Encryption. . Understanding DES's Role in 3DES Security and Design Choices

The deeply embedded crypto algorithm lives on in 3DES, but that standard demands careful design and informed choices. You have only until Sept. 9 to object to the federal government's proposed decertification of the Data Encryption Standard. After reading the proposal, I'm tempted to complain that it would not leave DES sufficiently dead. Many would say that it's already been 15 years since the end of this algorithm's useful life, even though they'd likely agree with the laudatory eulogy by crypto guru Bruce Schneier. Knowledge of DES implementation issues will continue to be important, however, to those who want to build or buy secure systems. The lasting significance of the Data Encryption Standard (DES) is highlighted by Triple DES (3DES), which boosts security while maintaining system compatibility. Exploring WEP and WPA Security Issues in Wireless Networks

The failure of the wired equivalent privacy (WEP) encryption standard to withstand hacking attacks did nothing to help the situation. And doubts linger over its successor, the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), which will include the second version of WPA 2 and the 802.1x authentication standard. But how much of this is hype and how much is reality? Intel believes that paranoia over wireless security is damaging the development of the industry. "Wireless security is seen more as a training than a technology issue," says Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Communications Group. "I don't see wireless as the weak link of internet security." Security specialist RSA Security agrees that a secure wireless solution is perfectly possible. Upgrade From S-DES To T-DES: Crucial For ATM Security Compliance

According to Gerhard Claassen, Managing Director of the Crypto Business Unit at JSE-listed, secure electronic payments company, Prism Holdings, the major card companies - Visa and MasterCard - have stated that by end-2003 all Host-to-Host PIN communication, such as that used in ATMs, must be triple DES (T-DES) based. In addition, by the end of 2005, all PIN entry devices will have to be T-DES based. "At present, the standard encryption method used in ATMs and POS systems to protect card users' PINs is known as single DES (Data Encryption Standard) or S-DES. However, the S-DES cryptographic algorithm has been cracked," he explains. "While it took a specially built algorithm cracking machine 22.75 hours to break the S-DES code, it means that devices which rely on S-DES for security can no longer be considered totally secure. Hence the requirement that S-DES-based security be upgraded to far stronger T-DES." The link for this article located at ITWeb is no longer available. . Leading financial institutions require the transition from S-DES to T-DES for ATM encryption, enhancing security measures for PIN safety..
