Genomics England Safeguards DNA Information in Face of Cyber Threats

On Wednesday, Genomics England – an ambitious project to map the DNA of a million Brits – proudly announced that it had completed the “100,000 Genomes Project” started in 2013, having sequenced 100,000 whole genomes in the National Health Service (NHS).. The project goal is to improve treatments for patients with rare inherited diseases and cancer, and to uncover new diagnoses. So far, it’s involved the creation of 13 NHS Genomic Medicine Centers (GMCs), a state-of-the-art sequencing center, and an automated analytics platform to return whole genome analyses to the NHS. It’s crunched through 85,000 people’s genomes (participants with cancer have three genomes sequenced: healthy and cancerous cells within their tumor and a third from their blood). Stanford Hospital: 20000 Patient Records Exposed Due To Privacy Lapse

The ongoing furor over fake SSL certificates continued to dominate security headlines, while increasing SpyEye botnet activity and leaked patient health information also drew attention the week of Sept. 5.. The week's biggest data breach news had nothing to do with Anonymous or any other online group. Instead, Stanford University's hospital confirmed that a spreadsheet containing 20,000 patient records had been posted onto a commercial Website. In this incident, an employee of a third-party service provider to the hospital posted the entire patient information spreadsheet to a Website in search of help on creating bar graphs. This is a remarkable, yet telling example of what can go wrong if employees are not trained to be privacy conscious. The link for this article located at eWeek is no longer available. . Understanding Privacy's Role in Healthcare Security Issues

I was sitting in the cardiologist's office waiting for what seemed like an eternity. Around me in the room were people mostly older than I, which means they were pretty old. After a few minutes, a woman in her late twenties or early thirties came in, towing a sample case. She sat next to me and brought out her Blackberry. Being the snoop that I am (hey, I'm a journalist--it goes with the territory), I glanced over at the tiny screen. Her e-mail was pretty boring, and in a few minutes the nurse finally called me back, so I didn't really learn anything interesting, except that security isn't at the top of most people's list of concerns. After much poking and prodding, the cardiologist was forced to admit that I wasn't going to drop dead immediately, and in fact, he admitted reluctantly, I would probably live out the week at least. So he handed me a prescription and sent me on my way. I glanced at it and sighed. Another 25 dollar co-pay. The link for this article located at securitypipeline.com is no longer available. . Some of the Internet's most adept computer hackers are forming a multimillion-dollar security company to advise the world's largest banks and hospitals how to keep their data safe. Members of the Boston-based L0pht Heavy Industries, who once boasted to the Senate that any one of them could cripple the Internet in the United States within 30 minutes, will form a new consulting company, AtStake, with more than $10 million in funding from venture capitalists. The new vice president of research and development -- widely considered among the world's leading hackers -- will continue to use only his online handle, "Mudge," to identify himself. "The U.S. Senate referred to me as Mudge. Mom and Dad refer to me as Mudge," he told The Associated Press. "I figure, why break the streak?"
