Experts Challenge Claims Made by GhostSec Regarding ICS Ransomware

SecurityWeek reports that pro-Ukraine hacktivist group GhostSec is having its claims of launching the first-ever ransomware attack against an industrial control system device questioned by cybersecurity experts. . GhostSec alleged that it was able to compromise a remote terminal unit in Belarus, a major ally of Russia, and while files were encrypted as a result of the intrusion, no ransom has been demanded. However, SynSaber noted that attacks against the targeted device, a Teleofis RTU968, which runs on the popular Linux OS OpenWrt, have been done before. "Given that these devices are running generic Linux kernels that happen to be providing connectivity to serial devices (which, of course, could be industrial), theres nothing in the evidence supplied by GhostSec that industrial was specifically attacked or that this attack represents a new paradigm shift in industrial hacking," said SynSaber Chief Technology Officer Ron Fabela. . Cyber group GhostSec reports it breached a remote terminal unit in Belarus, but specialists in industrial control systems express skepticism.. Schneider Electric: Critical Flaw Poses Risk To Power Plants

A severe vulnerability in a widely used industrial control software could have been used to disrupt and shut down power plants and other critical infrastructure.. Researchers at security firm Tenable found the flaw in the popular Schneider Electric software, used across the manufacturing and power industries, which if exploited could have allowed a skilled attacker to attack systems on the network. Banking Trojans Target SCADA: Industrial Control Networks Under Threat

Trend Micro researcher Kyle Wilhoit says the latest attacks on SCADA and industrial control networks are turning out to carry rather pedestrian banking Trojans, and have been on the rise since October 2014. . Talking to DarkReading, Wilhoit said rather than Stuxnet-style attacks, ne'er-do-wells are dropping banking Trojans into these networks disguised as updates to SCADA software. The link for this article located at The Register UK is no longer available. . A recent report from a Trend Micro expert highlights an alarming increase in banking Trojan incidents targeting industrial control systems, camouflaged as SCADA software updates.. Stuxnet Analysis: Complex Attack Routines on Industrial Control Systems

Ralph Langer has written the definitive analysis of Stuxnet: short, popular version, and long, technical version. Stuxnet is not really one weapon, but two. The vast majority of the attention has been paid to Stuxnet's smaller and simpler attack routine -- the one that changes the speeds of the rotors in a centrifuge, which is used to enrich uranium. . But the second and "forgotten" routine is about an order of magnitude more complex and stealthy. It qualifies as a nightmare for those who understand industrial control system security. And strangely, this more sophisticated attack came first. The simpler, more familiar routine followed only years later -- and was discovered in comparatively short order. Protecting SCADA Systems From Phishing Threats In Energy Sector

While the energy industry may fear the appearance of another Stuxnet on the systems they use to keep oil and gas flowing and the electric grid powered, an equally devastating attack could come from a much more mundane source: phishing. . Rather than worry about exotic cyber weapons like Stuxnet and its big brother, Flame, companies that have Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems -- computer systems that monitor and control industrial processes -- should make sure that their anti-phishing programs are in order, say security experts. The link for this article located at CSO Online is no longer available. . Utilities must prioritize safeguarding SCADA infrastructures against phishing attacks instead of being overly concerned with advanced cyber threats like Stuxnet.. Undetected Backdoor Access Discovered in Industrial Control Systems

Industrial control system comes with a backdoor: Although the system was password protected in general, the backdoor through the IP address apparently required no password and allowed direct access to the control system. Stuxnet Worm Risks: Threat To U.S. Maximum Security Prisons

Not too long ago the Stuxnet worm was discovered, and it seems that according to security analysts, if not dealt with quickly the Stuxnet worm could be exploited by hackers and allow them to remotely open the doors of maximum security prison. . It seems that the security systems in most American prisons, along with other industrial sites, are run by special computer equipment called industrial control systems (ICS). These are not only used to control the doors to maximum security prisons, but also used to control power plants, water treatment facilities and other critical national infrastructures. The link for this article located at Hacker News is no longer available. . The NotPetya malware signifies critical threats to American cybersecurity and essential utilities.
