There are some people for whom being told that something is impossible is all the motivation they need. That seems to be the case for Richard Perkins and Mike Tassey, who were told that an in-flight hacking platform was impossible. In response, the pair plan on showing off their off their Wi-Fi hacking, phone-snooping, home-made UAV at the Black Hat and Defcon hackerfests in Las Vegas. They call their creation the Wireless Aerial Surveillance Platform, or WASP.. Built from an old Air Force target drone, the WASP packs a lot of technological power into a flying high-endurance package. A tiny on-board computer (Linux powered, natch) is bristling with hacking tools, along with a custom-built 340 million word dictionary for brute-forcing passwords, the BackTrack suite, a 4G T-Mobile card, an HD camera, and 32 GB onboard storage. Okular and Evince are two excellent, versatile PDF viewers for the Linux platform. The big difference between the two rests in the interface. Evince has a much simpler design. Okular is more focused on a graphical view. If all you do is view documents, then either of these two programs will serve your needs well. . However, if you need to add notes for presentations or collaborative projects, Evince comes up a bit short. One of the hallmarks of using the Linux operating system is the ability to choose. The choices do not end with opting not to use Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows or Mac OS X and instead choosing from among dozens of Linux distros. You also get the freedom to decide which individual software tools and applications are the best fit for your daily routine. Network managers looking for an inexpensive way to better secure traffic crossing their nets might want to check out a free application from Intoto. Intoto, a provider of security software for enterprise network equipment and CPE gateways, last week at Interop, introduced a stand-alone intrusion-prevention system (IPS) application that the company says will help small and midsize companies looking for enterprise-scale security tools. . IntruPro IPS software can be downloaded onto a standard Linux x86 server and plugs in to the network in front of or behind an existing firewall. The company says the application is designed to prevent intruders from exploiting existing vulnerabilities on customer networks and computers, the vendor says. IntruPro IPS uses signature detection, protocol anomaly and traffic-anomaly technologies to determine the source of potential threats and then alerts network administrators of the suspicious activity. It is designed with stateful application-inspection capabilities to help reduce false alarms, and because it sits in line with the firewall, as soon as the software detects an attack, it will drop the malicious packets before they reach their intended target, the company says. The link for this article located at Network World is no longer available. . IntruPro IPS application is installable on a regular Linux x86 server and integrates seamlessly into the existing network infrastructure.. I recently installed a remote home camera security system using wireless Internet cameras and a fine free software application for Linux called ZoneMinder. The cameras are installed at a friend's house, and the application runs at mine. ZoneMinder is powerful, feature-rich, and sophisticated. ZoneMinder was written by and is maintained by Philip Coombes, who explains on his site that he wrote ZoneMinder after having been burgled. His garage had been broken into and all his power tools were stolen. A recent similar incident sent me looking for a Linux security camera system -- my friend Susan's home was broken into while she was away on vacation. I was called when her home security alarm went off about 11 a.m. and the security company couldn't reach her. By the time the police and I got there, the bad guys were gone. The front door had been kicked in and the TV and DVD/VCR player removed. I guess the sound of the alarm going off kept them from spending more time in the house. It seems strange that a home protected by an alarm system is so vulnerable, but the sign in the yard didn't deter them. The link for this article located at newsforge.com is no longer available. . Whether it's used to power complex datacenters or breathe new life into aging machines, Linux has undoubtedly established itself as a formidable IT presence. The "little OS that could" has proven adept at several networking chores including Web, file and print serving. So it comes as little surprise that AO's members are interested in employing Linux as they lock down their server room's vital assets.
