RCE Vulnerability in GPON Routers: Authentication Bypass Discovered

Security threats abound on the internet, which is why ethical hackers and security researchers spend much of their time in search of these issues. As part of the work that they do to keep the internet safe, researchers at vpnMentor announced that they have found an RCE vulnerability in the majority of gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON) home routers.. With more than 1 million people using the GPON fiber-optics system, the network is pretty popular. Because so many routers today use GPON internet, the researchers conducted a comprehensive assessment on a number of the home routers and found a way to bypass all authentication on the devices, which is the first vulnerability (CVE-2018-10561). Availability of TDSS/TDL-4 Botnet for Illicit Purposes and Activities

Cybercrooks have set up a web store that offers rented access to compromised machines on the TDSS/TDL-4 botnet. The latest version of the TDSS botnet agent bundles a component that turns compromised machines into a proxy connected to awmproxy.net.. AWMproxy - which purportedly accepts payment via PayPal, MasterCard, and Visa - charges between $3 per day to $300 a week to would-be Baron Samedis who don't have the nous to acquire their own zombies. The site even offers a Firefox add-on to customers, further dumbing down the process. Applications including surfing the net anonymously with someone else's IP address or launching cyber attacks, according to security blogger Bryan Krebs. Owners of infected systems used to send threats or view images of child abuse could find themselves in legal hot water. The link for this article located at The Register UK is no longer available. . Significant Events in the History of DDoS Attacks within Cyber Warfare

The concept of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks finally entered the mainstream public consciousness this month after assaults on the websites of Visa, MasterCard and PayPal made front page news.. Whilst these particular incidents were extremely high profile, a host of other DDoS attacks dating back to 1999 have littered the path leading up to Operation Avenge Assange. The beginnings of DDoS attacks The first notable use of a DDoS attack downed a University of Minnesota computer for over two days, but only a year later in 2000, sights were set higher when Amazon, CNN, eBay and Yahoo were all hit within the space of 24 hours, either slowing the sites down significantly or taking them altogether offline. Estimated losses to Amazon and Yahoo added up to approximately $1.1m. The link for this article located at The Next Web is no longer available. . Corporate Websites: Advisory on Risks from Cross-Site Scripting Issues

Insecurely written software still looms as one of the greatest threats to Internet commerce, and user-generated Web content is becoming a vast new vulnerability hackers want to exploit, according to experts at RSA Conference. Cross-site scripting attacks on Web sites can lead to malware taking over the browsers of machines that use the sites, said Caleb Sima, a member of the Secure Software Forum and co-founder of SPI Dynamics. . Exposing Online Anonymity: Temperature-Based Privacy Attack Analysis

A security researcher has a devised a novel attack on online anonymity systems in which he literally takes a computer's temperature over the internet. The attack uses a phenomenon called "clock skew" -- the tendency for the precise clocks in modern computers to drift off of the correct time at slightly different rates, which can be affected by heat. "When a crystal is manufactured, it has a clock skew, and it's different for each crystal (throughout its) lifetime," explains Steven J. Murdoch, a Cambridge University researcher who discussed his work at the Chaos Communications Congress on Thursday. . The link for this article located at Wired.com is no longer available. . Adapting Security Strategies For Internet Threats In Organizations

Increasingly, organizations are developing comprehensive security strategies and implementing a variety of online and on-demand security applications and services across the entire range of their IT operations. The need for fast, efficient and unobtrusive protection has led some security systems developers to become managed security service providers (MSSPs). In addition to delivering patches and system updates via automatic or on-demand downloads, MSSPs are broadening the range of security management services they provide. . We can't rely any longer on the comforting urban legend that the Internet is impervious to attack. The Internet is a massive collection of remotely accessible, often poorly maintained networks supported by software systems with little diversity and a history of serious security flaws. Fragile software is one major area of risk. The January 1990 systemwide meltdown of AT&T's phone network, the August 1996 nine-state power grid failure and the April 1997 partial Internet collapse were all tremendously destructive accidents. What if these systems are skillfully targeted? Another concern is the vulnerability of the Internet to physical attack. While the Net is resilient to individual routes dropping off, a few well-placed attacks at major peering points, at cable choke points at bridges and tunnels, or on cross-country runs beside isolated rail lines would be very damaging. A chemical fire in Baltimore's Howard Street tunnel disrupted area Internet traffic for days last July. The link for this article located at eWeek is no longer available. .
