Storm Worm Email Attacks Spike: 60 Times More Threats Detected

The largest proliferation of email virus attacks in more than a year is likely to have occurred last Thursday, according to security company Postini. Postini said two variations of the Storm Worm virus, which originally spread across the internet in January, have quickly driven global virus levels 60 times higher than their daily average. Email users should be on alert for messages with "love"-related subject lines and an executable attachment that would contain a Trojan virus, as well as messages with "Worm Alert!" subject lines that contained a dot-zip file full of malicious code. . According to warning notices from Postini - as well as VeriSign, which has also been following the threat - clicking on the executable file in one of the new Storm Worm emails installs a rootkit with anti-security measures that mask the malicious software's presence from virus scans and shut down security programs that may be running. The virus then taps into a private peer-to-peer network where it can download new updates and upload personal information from the compromised computer. Additionally, the virus scans the machine's hard drive to locate email addresses to which it can replicate itself. The link for this article located at Silicon is no longer available. . Virus Attack Dynamics on Linux and Unix Servers: Security Insights

Attack and shut down Linux or Unix related servers most likely shut down a virus means of getting to another machine. Windows servers that makes up under 30 percent of the servers in The Internet. If all Windows Servers are shut down in The Internet. The Internet will still be operating. No point writing a virus if it stops itself from spreading. Common sense. Network Security Sales Rise By 23% Due To Virus Attack Fears

Fuelled by increasing fears of virus and hack attacks, global network security appliance and software sales continue to climb steadily, rising four per cent to $1bn between the first and second quarters of this year, according to newly published figures. . The latest Network Security Appliances and Software study from Infonetics Research also predicted that security appliance and software sales will grow by 23 per cent to $1.3bn by the second quarter of 2006. Annual sales revenue is projected to grow to $6.4bn by 2008. "Some vendors are starting to build integrated content security appliances (virus scanning, spam filtering, spyware/malware security, etc.) and are intentionally leaving out VPN and firewall functionality, so these products can act as a supplement to existing embedded VPN/firewall products," said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. According to the report Cisco leads the network security appliance and software market with 34 per cent of worldwide sales, while Check Point is second with 10 per cent and Juniper Networks third with eight per cent. Survey Insights: Fast-Growing Companies Struggle with Security Breaches

Nearly half of the nation's fastest-growing companies suffered a recent breach in information security, according to a survey released Monday by consulting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers. The poll of CEOs from over 400 firms -- companies with revenues ranging from $5 million to $150 million which Pricewaterhouse dubs 'trendsetters' and tracks on an ongoing basis -- uncovered a disturbing trend: smaller organizations haven't responded to such breaches, and the ensuing losses, by beefing up their security budgets. "Earlier this year, we saw the security budgets in large organization increasing," said Mark Lobel, the senior manager for security and privacy services at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the author of the survey results. "But we're seeing these fast-growing companies not spending as consistently as their more mature brethren. "They do that at their peril," he added. According to the survey, 46 percent of the fast-growing companies polled said they had been the victim of a recent security breach. The vast majority -- 90 percent -- of those breaches were caused by computer viruses or worms, with some companies under attack from multiple vectors, including unauthorized network access (17 percent), denial-of-service (DoS) attacks (13 percent), and wireless intrusion (2 percent). Hackers were cited as the source of 61 percent of the attacks, followed by e-mail at 27 percent. Attacks by unauthorized users and employees, former employees, and competitors, however, accounted for more than 1 out of every 10 attacks. Almost a third of UK companies experience a complete network crash at least once every 12 weeks, according to a new study. A quarter of companies say they've lost critical data because of virus attacks, and 16 per cent say that, in the last six months, they've had to take their network down to sort out a severe virus problem. The survey, carried out by research firm Vanson Bourne, was sponsored by Network Associates. Vanson talked to 120 network managers in large UK organisations in both the private and public sectors. The main problem seems to be email viruses, with only 34 per cent of respondents feeling completely satisfied that their current antivirus measures are sufficient to rebuff such attacks.
