Steganography is a technique for embedding information in files such that it is not obvious that this information has been embedded. The technique is extensively used in putting digital watermarks in such things as digitized artwork, but it can also be used to incorporate secure traffic into files.

The first thing to realize is that not all files are equal. Executable (object) code, for example, is not suitable for embedding a hidden message into, as every bit is important and even the changing of one bit can cause the program to not execute correctly. However, for some data files this is not such a problem, and in these cases steganography can be successfully done.
