Today, months after the attacks, the Internet is no better protected, security experts say. "A lot of dust was stirred up when [the attacks] happened. When the dust settled, people saw there was no silver lining to wrap around the problem," says Mitchell Hryckowian, vice president of security at Interliant, a Houston-based ASP.

Security is important, but preventing similar distributed denial-of-service attacks is difficult, he adds.
