The promise of combining fingerprint recognition with smartcards is now a step closer to being fulfilled. Norman Data Defense Systems -- one of the companies working on smartcard data security systems with Siemens and others -- announced it has succeeded in combining the two security systems by putting fingerprint recognition directly onto a smartcard. However, Siemens said previously that production versions of the smartcards and their partner readers is approximately a year away, and that for the moment smartcard security for PCs and servers is still a niche market. "Capture, processing and comparison will be on the card by the end of next year," said Tom Gundtofte-Bruun, a marketing manager for Siemens.
