Linux Authentication Solutions Versus Active Directory Options

While Microsoft's Active Directory (AD) is an effective play to circumvent the inherent central authentication foibles of Linux, getting the technology synced with servers has been a complex undertaking for IT practitioners, to say the least. Integrating with Windows eventually has to happen since there is no denying the majority. However, there are obvious open source secure solutions to authentication with Windows - LDAP and Kerberos along with a touch of Samba can go a long way in providing that type of solution. Read on for a devil's advocate's view of Linux authentication in a Windows environment - do you think these solutions match up to what Microsoft can put out? . Integrating Linux Authentication With Windows Active Directory

One of the main problems with UNIX/Windows environments is the lack of integration between the two platforms. Userids have to be created separately on each environment, passwords changed separately, etc. This doubles administrative work. This paper will explore using one of several different ways that you can active directory integrate your LINUX boxes to your windows AD forest. This document will give you integration between your linux boxes and your Windows AD forest. Additionally, it will allow you to control who can login to the LINUX boxes by group memberships within Active Directory. It will give you full . Implementing Active Directory SSO For Linux Desktops And Servers

I am an advocate of centralized identity management and I think Active Directory makes a great repository for user account information. Interoperability can be a challenge, though. For example, you may work in a mixed environment of Linux/Unix and Windows and want users to take advantage of their Windows accounts when logging on at a Linux/Unix machine. This provides single sign-on for users who otherwise would need to maintain two different sets of passwords. . With this in mind, I set out to accomplish what I considered to be a fairly straightforward goal: Configure the Linux desktops and servers in my office to accept logins using accounts stored in AD. My metrics for success were relatively modest. I wanted to sit down at a Linux desktop, enter a set of Windows credentials, and get a KDE or Gnome desktop with a home directory that has appropriate access permissions. Implementing single sign-on (SSO) in Linux with Active Directory enhances user experience and streamlines administration while ensuring security and efficiency.
