Advocates Urge Reform on Phone Metadata Collection Under USA PATRIOT Act

A group of technology companies, non-profits and privacy and human rights organizations have sent a letter to President Barack Obama, the director of national intelligence and a wide range of Congressional leaders, calling for an end to the bulk collection of phone metadata under Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act. . The letter, sent by dozens of organizations and companies, comes at a time when legislators in the United States are considering a new bill that would repeal the Patriot Act altogether. That measure likely will face stiff opposition in the House of Representatives, but less-sweeping reforms may be on the table as well. In the letter, representatives from the EFF, CloudFlare, Silent Circle, the ACLU, Mozilla, Human Rights Watch and many other organizations say that whatever form the changes take, Section 215 collection needs to end once and for all. Opposition to FBI Internet Surveillance Plan by Advocacy Groups

Companies and advocacy groups opposed to the FBI's plan to make the Internet more accommodating to covert law enforcement surveillance are sharpening a new argument against the controversial proposal: that law enforcement's Internet spying capabilities are just fine as it is. . In comments filed with the FCC Tuesday, advocates with the Center for Democracy and Technology argue the government hasn't offered any evidence that law enforcement agencies face obstacles in conducting Internet wiretaps under current regulations -- which obligate ISPs and other companies to cooperate with court-authorized surveillance, but do not force them to retrofit their networks with special surveillance gear, as the government is asking. "In the absence of evidence of any problem, it is impossible for the Commission to act," wrote CDT, representing a handful of technology companies, industry associations and advocacy groups, including the Computer and Communications Industry Association, Dialpad Communications, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Information Technology Association of America, and others. Contrasting Approaches To Digital Security In Light Of Recent Governance

Bush hasn't even taken office yet, but there's already a battle brewing for his attention between groups that are espousing different approaches for regulating online data privacy. In a letter sent Tuesday to Bush, congressional leaders and various other federal and state government officials, and then publicly released today, a group of 17 organizations ranging from the American Library Association to the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) proposed a privacy-protection framework that they said they hope will be acted on early this year. The proposal by Washington-based EPIC and its allies coincides -- and potentially conflicts -- with the American Electronics Association's release earlier today of a list of eight privacy principles that the technology industry trade group wants Congress to consider as it mulls privacy-related legislation The link for this article located at Computer World is no longer available. .
