Dark Web marketplaces are troves of illicit products and data: stolen credentials, credit card numbers, and, as researchers recently discovered, remote desktop protocol (RDP) access to the security and building automation systems of a major international airport – for the cheap price of $10. . Researchers from the McAfee Advanced Threat Research team used an open search on Ultimate Anonymity Service (UAS), a Russian RDP shop, to search for open RDP ports at that specific organization. They narrowed their search from 65,536 possible IPs to three; by obtaining a complete IP address, they could look up the WHOIS data and find all addresses belonging to a major airport, the name of which is being withheld. Aviation Security Identity Cards (ASICs) are intended to prevent criminals and terrorists from gaining access to restricted areas in airports, as well as to airplanes, but Australian-based Aviation ID, a company that issues ASICs, has been hacked. . The company, which services regional and rural airports throughout Australia, reportedly received emails alerting it to the possibility that the ASIC application had been stolen. As is now required under Australia’s new privacy act, which went into effect in February 2018, Aviation ID notified hundreds of people who had applied for or renewed their ID cards that their information might have been compromised. Airport screeners are using new technology to find explosives instead of hunting for tweezers, Department of Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff said on Friday. Locked and armoured cockpit doors and air marshals on planes are part of a switch in main security concern from hijackers to people who might want to blow up airplanes, Chertoff said in a speech at an event in San Francisco hosted by the Commonwealth Club. He said: "The things we're really worried about are explosives." Airport screeners are being retrained "to move them away from looking for things like nail clippers to more sophisticated chemicals and detonating devices". . Airport security is an ever-growing concern these days, as fears about the potential for terrorist attacks loom worldwide. One airport adopting major security upgrades is the Santiago Airport in Chile, which recently opened 60 checkpoint kiosks utilizing biometric security software running on SUSE Enterprise Linux. Earlier this year, the Policia Investigaciones de Chile (PICH), the Chilean equivalent of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, wanted to implement a biometrics access control system at the airport. The security upgrade project is a collaborative effort between Unisys, which provided the hardware, Intelitrac, the creator of the biometrics security system, and AssureTec and Cognitec, developers of facial recognition and document-scanning software. The system combines facial recognition, document authentication, and fingerprint verification technologies into a single package that is easily deployed in a manned kiosk and managed from a data center on the premises. The Bush administration said Thursday that it will upgrade computer systems used by passenger screeners in more than 100 U.S. airports in an effort to improve security . Security screeners who are now employed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) receive only cell phones, pagers and computers with dial-up modems. This plan aims to create an information technology "infrastructure" that would give screeners a faster, more coordinated way to receive sensitive information. The plan is a joint project of the TSA, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), and the U.S. Customs Service. "These agencies are setting an example for the rest of the federal government that we can prioritize our resources, and work together to meet our collective Homeland Security goals," said Steve Cooper of the White House's Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
