SecTor: Major Privacy Threat from Tor in Millions of Mobile Devices

There is a privacy threat lurking on perhaps hundreds of millions of devices, that could enable potential attackers to track and profile users, by using information leaked via the Tor network, even if the users never intentionally installed Tor in the first place. Learn more in an informative article: . In a session at the SecTor security conference in Toronto, Canada on October 10, researchers Adam Podgorski and Milind Bhargava fromDeloitte Canadaoutlined and demonstrated previously undisclosed research into how they were able to determine that personally identifiable information (PII) is being leaked by millions of mobile users every day over Tor. The irony of the issue is that Tor is a technology and a network that is intended to help provide and enable anonymity for users. With Tor, traffic travels through a number of different network hops to an eventual exit point in the hope of masking where the traffic originated from. Podgorski said that there are some users that choose to install a Tor browser on their mobile devices, but that’s not the problem. The problem is that Tor is being installed by mobile applications without user knowledge and potentially putting users at risk. Apple OS X Sandboxing: Security Risk and Application Impact

Researchers claim to have discovered a vulnerability with the sandbox security mechanism used by Apple. The sandbox, which is baked into the kernel of Mac OS X, is designed to apply application restrictions, so that code that has no reason to access a network isn't able to access a corporate LAN or the internet, for example. . The restriction means that even if the code contains bugs, hackers will be stuck if they try to exploit the vulnerability to do anything else. All applications published through the App Store "must implement sandboxing" by the start of March 2012. The link for this article located at The Register UK is no longer available. . Scientists discover a flaw within Apple's isolation mechanisms, highlighting possible dangers in app limitations.. Apple Security, Sandboxing Issues, Application Exploit Risk. . Emerging SSL Risks: Malicious Activity Through Network Traffic

As more applications turn to SSL to help keep users secure, they may also be inadvertently hampering the ability of enterprises to ensure malicious code and exploits are not slithering through network traffic from the endpoint.. According to The Application Usage and Risk Report conducted by Palo Alto Networks, applications using SSL represent 25 percent of the applications examined and 23 percent of the overall bandwidth used by applications in its study. To compile the report, the security vendor analyzed the traffic of 1,253 organizations and a viewed more than 28 exabytes of data between October 2010 and April 2011. The report predicts that applications that use SSL will continue to grow in size, as more applications follow the relatively recent lead of Twitter, Facebook and Gmail, which have all recently set SSL either as a standard setting or as a user-selectable option. The link for this article located at CSO Online is no longer available. . The rise of SSL usage heightens vulnerabilities, enabling malware to traverse networks undetected, affecting organizations significantly.. applicationRisk, SSLApplication, networkTraffic, maliciousExploits, endpointSecurity. .
