Hackers are taking over high-profile Instagram users’ accounts and holding them to ransom, it was revealed this week. At least four influencers have lost control of their accounts and received demands to send bitcoin for their return, but in some cases the attackers retained control or deleted the accounts.. Motherboard reported that Los Angeles-based fitness Instagram influencer, Kevin Kreider, lost control of his Instagram account and more than 100,000 followers after falling victim to a phishing scam. The account hijackers sent him a fraudulent email offering a sponsorship deal with French Connection that took him to a fake Instagram portal which then stole his account details. Cyber-spy groups, whose numbers are growing with little constraint, have begun hacking each other. Hellsing, a small and technically unremarkable cyber-espionage group, was subjected to a spear-phishing attack by another threat actor last year, before deciding to strike back with its own malware-infected emails.. The aftermath of the dust-up was uncovered by security researchers from Kaspersky Lab, who estimate further incidents along the same lines are likely. Hackers have begun using compromised servers instead of client PCs to launch more powerful denial of service attacks. Hundreds of web servers are infected with a DoS application that transforms them into zombie drones, according to database security firm Imperva.. These zombie servers are controlled using a simple web application, consisting of just 90 lines of PHP code. Servers are harder to compromise than desktop PCs, which can potentially be compromised as easily as tricking a user into opening a maliciously constructed email or visiting a dodgy website. However once compromised servers offer more horsepower and, typically, fatter pipes for throwing out spurious traffic. Attacks launched from web servers may also be more difficult to detect. "Trace backs typically lead to a lone server at a random hosting company," Imperva warns. The link for this article located at The Register UK is no longer available. . Hackers in Pakistan have declared a cyber jihad on the US and Britain, only days after the FBI issued a warning predicting as much. Earlier this week, Pakistani hacker group GForce defaced the website of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Center, part of the US Department of Commerce, leaving a message promising more of the same type of attacks. The FBI warning, issued last Friday, said: "Many Muslim groups around the world have significant experience in launching sophisticated and sustained cyber attacks. "In this context, a variety of pro-Muslim hacker groups, such as the G-Force Pakistan, The Pakistan Hackerz Club or Doktor Nuker, could use these tactics against the US and its allies."
