Uncertainty about the technology remains so great that many big businesses are still reluctant to install wireless systems throughout their offices. But while perceptions are hard to change, progress is being made. A new standard is in development that should ease security fears and also cut back on confusion about how to better protect data. Vipin Jain, inventor of the 802.1x authentication protocol and a vice president at Extreme Networks, recently spoke with CNET News.com about recent security developments in the context of wireless networking. The link for this article located at ZDNet is no longer available. . In today's digital landscape, enterprises encounter serious challenges securing wireless networks while integrating complex systems, especially with rising cyber threats.. RADIUS is a widely used protocol in network environments. It is commonly used for embedded network devices such as routers, modem servers, switches, etc. This analysis deals with some of the characteristics of the base RADIUS protocol and of the User-Password attribute. Depending on the mode of authentication used, the described User-Password weaknesses may or may not compromise the security of the underlying authentication scheme. A complete compromise of the User-Password attribute would result in the complete compromise of the normal Username/Password or PAP authentication schemes, because both of these systems include otherwise unprotected authentication information in the User-Password attribute. On the other hand when CHAP or a Challenge/Response system is in use, a complete compromise of the User-Password attribute would only expose the underlying CHAP or Challenge/Response information to additional attack, which may or may not lead to a complete compromise of the authentication system, depending on the strength of the underlying authentication system. The link for this article located at Joshua Hill / bugtraq is no longer available. . The RADIUS protocol is crucial for network authentication, allowing centralized control for secure user access, especially in resource-constrained embedded devices in IoT.. Kerberos Authentication For Secure Network Identity Verification

Kerberos is an authentication protocol that lets clients and servers reliably verify each other's identity before establishing a network connection. Developed at MIT in the late 1980s, Kerberos takes its name from the three-headed hound in Greek mythology that guards the entrance to Hades. But instead of guarding the underworld, today's Kerberos brings a measure of security to a distributed computer environment, where one computer can access the resources of any other machine on a network.. . .. Kerberos is an authentication protocol that lets clients and servers reliably verify each other's identity before establishing a network connection. Developed at MIT in the late 1980s, Kerberos takes its name from the three-headed hound in Greek mythology that guards the entrance to Hades. But instead of guarding the underworld, today's Kerberos brings a measure of security to a distributed computer environment, where one computer can access the resources of any other machine on a network. Paul Hill, information systems senior programmer at MIT and a member of the Kerberos development team since 1992, outlines the benefits of the Kerberos system. First, it has been subjected to public review for over a decade. Second, version 5 of the protocol-the most current version-was developed within the IETF standards process. Finally, Kerberos provides for secure authentication and message integrity, as well as data confidentiality and mutual authentication between a client and a server.
