Banco de Chile Malware Attack Results In $10 Million Loss

Banco de Chile publicly disclosed on 28 May that it had detected a virus, presumably from international networks, that affected thousands of its workstations. Now the bank has learned that the cyber-attack was malware and resulted in attackers transferring approximately $10m via the bank's SWIFT international money transfer systems. . Most of the money has been traced to locations in Hong Kong, and it is believed that a criminal group from Eastern Europe or Asia is responsible for the attack. ATM Flaws Exposed: Barnaby Jack Demonstrates Hacking Techniques

A security expert has identified flaws in the design of some automated teller machines that make them vulnerable to hackers, who could make the ubiquitous cash dispensers spit out their cash holdings.. Barnaby Jack, head of research at Seattle-based, security firm IOActive Labs, will demonstrate methods for "jackpotting" ATMs at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas that starts on July 28. "ATMs are not as secure as we would like them to be," Jeff Moss, founder of the Black Hat conference and a member of President Obama's Homeland Security Advisory Council said. "Barnaby has a number of different attacks that make all the money come out." Jack declined to discuss his techniques before the conference. The world's biggest ATM manufacturers include Diebold Inc and NCR Corp. Officials with those companies could not be reached for comment. Secure-Me: The Ultimate Firefox Browser for British Banking Security

UK users are being offered a 'hardened' version of Mozilla Firefox that can secure access to online bank accounts, maker Network Intercept has announced. Although the security built into the browser is identical in its workings to the US version which has been available for some weeks, the Secure-Me browser does feature some necessary localisation. . The main difference between Secure-Me and a conventional browser is that it accesses the Internet after setting up an encrypted channel between itself and Network's Intercept's US-based cloud. All sites are visited through this layer, which also renders sessions anonymous. Its makers say this accelerates browsing and blocks domain redirection attacks, and stops malware having access to personal data within a session. In the background, a semi-independent keystroke interference program (which works with other programs on a PC) blocks both hardware and software keylogging. The program also incorporates Clam-AV antivirus scanning, integrates file encryption for files on local or attached drives, and allows encrypted file transfer. Cambridge Research on Chip And PIN Relay Attack and Banking Risks

Here is a hugely popular article on LinuxSecurity.com from 2007 that is even more true today. Two Cambridge researchers have devised a relay attack with a hacked chip and PIN terminal that could enable attackers to bypass bank card security measures. Saar Drimer and Steven Murdoch, members of the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory, demonstrated in January how they could modify a supposedly tamper-proof chip and PIN terminal to play Tetris. They have now extended the hack to demonstrate how they can compromise the system by relaying card information between a fake card and a genuine one. . Chip and PIN, introduced last year, is a security measure in which a customer must enter a four-digit code when they use a credit or debit card. The researchers argue that the system is not as secure as the banking industry claims. Details of the prototype attack were released on Monday. In it, Drimer and Murdoch demonstrate how a chip and PIN system could be compromised to steal diamonds. The link for this article located at ZDNet UK is no longer available. . Sun Microsystems Security Accelerator for VoIP and Online Banking

Sun Microsystems' product plans are up in the air pending its acquisition by Oracle, but the company's chip engineers continue to present new designs in the hope they'll see the light of day. . At the Hot Chips conference at Stanford University on Tuesday, Sun presented plans for a security accelerator chip that it said would reduce encryption costs for applications such as VoIP calls and online banking Web sites. The chip, known as a coprocessor, will be included on the same silicon as Rainbow Falls, the code name for the follow-on to Sun's multithreaded Ultrasparc T2 processor.
