Engage in 2600 Hacker Radio Show Distribution via BitTorrent

Emmanuel Goldstein from 2600 Magazine sez, "A few weeks ago, 2600 made its entire archive of radio shows available for free on the web in high fidelity. The response to this has been so great that the bandwidth charges have now gone through the roof. . So in order to offset this, 2600 is appealing to the file-sharing community to use BitTorrent technology to distribute these files instead of traditional downloading from a single website. This is being done in the spirit of showing the world how file-sharing makes content more accessible, cheaper to manage, and quicker to download - concepts that fly in the face of the mainstream media's interpretation. Defining torrents as nothing more than a tool for piracy is a great way to make people afraid of it. Once its true uses and power become more widely known, the world can benefit in so many ways. Getting these radio shows out to the world will be a small accomplishment, but an inspirational one." The link for this article located at boing-boing is no longer available. . uTorrent Security Breach Alert: Malware Incident Report for Users

The Web site that hosts uTorrent was hacked by an unknown person or group early this morning. After initially stating that the "mainline" BitTorrent site had been hacked as well, the company now says that it doesn't think that BitTorrent.com was affected. BitTorrent, the owner of the Web sites and the torrent clients hosted there, reported in a blog post that the breach occurred around 4:20 a.m PT.. According to the blog, the proper executable files for both programs were replaced with "a fake antivirus 'scareware' program" called Security Shield. The company shut off the download spigot at around 6 a.m. and has since restored the proper download files. BitTorrent advises that anybody who downloaded the programs between 4:20 a.m. and 6:10 a.m. PT runs a security scan. The link for this article located at CNET is no longer available. . Compromised uTorrent executable files were substituted with fraudulent antivirus applications following a security incident on the website. Risks Of Bittorrent Usage Over Tor For Privacy Protection

An increasing number of people are asking us about the recent paper coming out of Inria in France around Bittorrent and privacy attacks. This post tries to explain the attacks and what they imply.. There are three pieces to the attack (or three separate attacks that build on each other, if you prefer). The first attack is on people who configure their Bittorrent application to proxy their tracker traffic through Tor. These people are hoping to keep their IP address secret from somebody looking over the list of peers at the tracker. The problem is that several popular Bittorrent clients (the authors call out uTorrent in particular, and I think Vuze does it too) just ignore their socks proxy setting in this case. Choosing to ignore the proxy setting is understandable, since modern tracker designs use the UDP protocol for communication, and socks proxies such as Tor only support the TCP protocol -- so the developers of these applications had a choice between "make it work even when the user sets a proxy that can't be used" and "make it mysteriously fail and frustrate the user". The result is that the Bittorrent applications made a different security decision than some of their users expected, and now it's biting the users. The attack is actually worse than that: apparently in some cases uTorrent, BitSpirit, and libTorrent simply write your IP address directly into the information they send to the tracker and/or to other peers. Tor is doing its job: Tor is _anonymously_ sending your IP address to the tracker or peer. Nobody knows where you're sending your IP address from. But that probably isn't what you wanted your Bittorrent client to send. The link for this article located at torProject is no longer available. . Monitoring Threats to BitTorrent Users’ Privacy and Data Safety

A worrying site which claims to allow users to search BitTorrent networks for IP addresses being used to share torrents has appeared in recent days. The site, which has a very paranoid feel, also contains numerous security-related documents from ISPs and other sources. An apparently related video being mailed to studios is even more creepy. But is all as it seems?. MIGWhile many BitTorrent users operate their clients without a second thought, many are well aware that everything they can do has the potential to be monitored by someone, somewhere. The data available in BitTorrent swarms is necessarily public The link for this article located at TorrentFreak is no longer available. . A concerning tracking platform asserts it can observe torrent users, prompting fears about the safety of file sharing. Stay updated..
