Huawei's Legal Battle Against NDAA Section 889 Unconstitutionality

Huawei has filed a motion for a summary judgment against the US government that alleges section 889 of the National Defense Authorization Act 2019 (NDAA) is unconstitutional. . In the motion, Huawei argues that section 889 specifically targets Huawei, saying the legislation disrupts the company's existing contracts; stigmatises the company and its employees as supposed tools of the Chinese government; and seriously threatens the company's ability to do business in the US. Cisco Report Highlights VoIP Abuse and Financial Risks from Vhishing

In its recent annual security report, Cisco predicted VOIP abuse as a potential area for cyber crime growth. "Criminals use brute-force techniques to hack private branch exchange (PBX) systems to place fraudulent, long-distance calls; usually international," the report states. "These incidents, often targeting small or midsize businesses, have resulted in significant financial losses for some companies." . One of the most popular scams employed by VOIP-abusing criminals are vhishing schemes, which are telephone-based phishing ploys. The report points to one recent vhishing scam targeting the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Vhishers called U.S. consumers on mobile and land-line phones to inform them they were delinquent in loan payments that had been applied for over the Internet or made through a payday lender. Criminals were able to collect personal information, such as Social Security numbers from victims, according to the report. "What we've seen in the last couple of years is growing VOIP abuse around getting access to someone else system with baseline security hacks and then either using it for criminal purposes or selling it to other folks as long distance," said Patrick Peterson, Cisco fellow and chief security researcher."Some people have made money that way and some victims received huge telcom bills." Proposed US Data Regulation Bill Faces Criticism Over Privacy Concerns

A proposed US congressional bill to regulate the collection of personal data is being almost universally panned, with privacy advocates arguing it's inadequate and pro-business groups saying it goes too far.. The draft legislation (PDF) would for the first time impose national standards on how companies collect IP addresses, viewer history, and other potentially sensitive data from individuals. It would apply to websites and offline operations as well. In its current form, it would apply to any business or non-profit organization that collects personal information from at least 5,000 individuals in a given year. In a nod to privacy advocates, groups would be required to get individuals' consent before storing names, email addresses, and other data. But acquiring that consent could be as simple as adding a statement to a website, a policy that's anathema to many civil-liberties boosters because it's viewed as opt-out rather than opt-in. Some privacy advocates also worry that the half-hearted restrictions will preempt many state laws that do a much better job of controlling the collection of personal data. Business and advertising groups, meanwhile, are fretting that the language is unduly broad and could hamper their ability to employ targeted advertising on websites. It is now estimated that over half a million computers around the world have been infected, including many thousands of businesses. In fact, 1 in 4 e-mails in circulation -a total of more than 8 million- have been infected by this worm. Financial losses caused by Mydoom.A are incalculable. Last Thursday (Jan 29), CNN estimated that due to loss of productivity and costs of tech support, the damage could reach 250 million dollars. The mi2g consultancy firm has estimated losses caused by this virus at 38.5 billon dollars. And the costs of the Mydoom.A epidemic could continue to increase as the worm is designed to continue spreading until February 12. The rates of propagation has in fact remained constant with even the occasional increase. Analyzing UK's Poor Security Readiness Against Major Threats

Despite the proliferation of high-profile attacks and a spate of recent worm and virus outbreaks European businesses are still not heeding the warning to properly protect themselves. And the UK is up there among the worst offenders - with British businesses being put to shame by the near-watertight security in place within companies in Sweden and Germany. The findings are the result of a Europe-wide survey conducted by security vendor MacAfee. Across Europe, 28 per cent of companies surveyed have no measures in place to protect them against the new breed of 'blended threat' - such as Sobig and Blaster. But that average, when broken down, reveals a great disparity in the preparedness of UK firms. While 12 per cent of German firms admit to being open to attack by such viruses, the figure in the UK is a staggering 43 per cent, according to MacAfee. The UK's blushes are spared only slightly by the Dutch who manage a shocking 43 per cent. The link for this article located at silicon.com is no longer available. . US Firms Seek Modifications to EU Data Protection Regulations

A group of American companies is attempting this week to persuade the European Union to relax its rules governing data protection, claiming they are bad for business. The 10 companies, who dub themselves the Global Privacy Alliance (GPA) and whose members include IBM, Oracle and VeriSign, believe that the EU has put too much emphasis on the protection of individuals' privacy, and not enough on ensuring the free flow of information between companies. The GPA wants several significant changes to be made to EU privacy laws--the simplification of the cross-border flow of data, possibly through industry self-regulation rather than legislation; the harmonization of EU privacy regulation between member states; the relaxation of restrictions on data sharing between affiliate companies, and the exclusion of 'business contact data' from such laws.
