The rush of businesses to move their operations to the cloud is creating a slipstream that's pulling security services into the nimbus. . "People have become more comfortable now with the cloud so they're feeling more comfortable leveraging certain cloud services for security," said Brian Contos, CISO for Blue Coat, a web filter appliance company. I've long been a believer that a judgement gap, influenced largely by negative media coverage, is what continues to hold back cloud adoption among small organizations. And judging from the results of a recent study completed by comScore, my intuition has been fairly on track. . The biggest issue surrounding cloud uptake, at least for small businesses worldwide, seems to be none other than an issue of perception. How so? The study, which surveyed companies with between 25 to 499 computers in the USA, Germany, France, and the UK, found that 42 percent of small businesses which had yet to adopt cloud technologies were concerned about reliability/uptime. Likewise, a full 60 percent had cited issues with data security as reasoning for staying cloud-free. The link for this article located at Beta News is no longer available. . In testing cloud computing services and observing the growth of cloud activities, we've noticed that there are distinct phases that organizations go through in adopting cloud.. First, application developers fall in love with cloud-based disposable infrastructure and/or ready-built app development platforms that circumvent long purchasing cycles and capital asset growth limitations. Then other attractions, like commodity rentable infrastructure, or expansive platforms, become attractive. Sometimes applications are either extended to the cloud as private growth areas, or moved totally off premises. In 2012, the number of cloud hosting service providers is likely to increase dramatically due to meet demand in these areas. But security and reliability/SLA worries must be assuaged, and that will continue to spawn not only management application makeovers, but also new, cloud-based services for both cloud and on-premise resources and assets. BLACK BOX CLOUD DEPLOYMENTS are being shunned by firms looking to backup data due to security concerns. Cloud deployments, which have gained popularity in the past five years through the promise of accessing seemingly unlimited resources conjured up out of thin air, are being shunned for use as redundant storage due to fears about data security. . Talking to The INQUIRER, Bob Roudebush, VP of marketing at Neverfail, said that "worries of having data in other datacentres is why cloud adoption is not higher, even for disaster recovery". In recent months there have been several data breaches on cloud deployed services and Neverfail, which works with firms to harden operations against failure, said that customers are still wary of clouds. Roudebush said "the cloud sounds ideal for disaster recovery" but that one of the big issues with backing up data is to "ensure the security of data in more than one location". Worries about the security of data kept in cloud platforms discourage organizations from leveraging cloud solutions for backup and business continuity.. Everyone is talking about cloud computing, but security issues are stalling widespread adoption. While vendors work to address enterprise concerns (the good), experts warn there. The good: Research, partnerships and products How to reliably audit your cloud provider security One of the biggest issues with cloud services is that there's no reliable mechanism that allows cloud customers to audit their provider The link for this article located at Network World is no longer available. .
