Mind Your Own Business Act: New Privacy Regulations Enforcing CEO Penalties

A US senator has introduced a new privacy bill which he claims goes further than the EU’s GDPR, introducing prison sentences for culpable CEOs. What is your opinion on this bill? Learn more: . Introduced by Ron Wyden, the Mind Your Own Business Act would create a national “Do Not Track” system enabling consumers to stop companies from tracking them online, selling or sharing their data, or targeting ads based on personal information. Like the GDPR, it would issue maximum fines of up to 4% of annual revenue to non-compliant firms, but unlike the EU law, could also levy 10-20 year criminal sentences for executives who knowingly lie to the FTC. Privacy Concerns Regarding License Plate Surveillance Technology

I have a problem with this. These cameras don't just record license plates, but people, bicycles and animals. It indiscriminately records everything, not just traffic accidents. Cameras should not be a substitute for police doing their job. This data is being sold to and used by anyone who wants it - ICE, private citizens, and other government agencies. If you had a detective on the street corner or in front of your house 24/7 recording every vehicle passing by, the time it passed every day in perpetuity and people in the car, people would see that as an invasion of privacy. "I have nothing to hide" is something said by someone in a position of privilege - our landscapers, housekeepers, and others in our neighborhood in the wrong place at the wrong time are being targeted. Please comment below - we'd love to hear what you think. . The link for this article located at Washington Post / CNN is no longer available. . The rise of consumer license plate readers raises significant privacy concerns. While enhancing security, they threaten autonomy by enabling invasive tracking and data collection.. Congressional Action Needed for Effective US Data Regulation

As of May 2019, over 20 US states have introduced bills seeking to regulate data privacy, data security, or some combination of the two. While many of these bills agree in spirit (i.e. privacy good, data collection and usage bad), the various bills are decidedly more divergent as to how to accomplish these objectives. . With the states locked in an arms race to one-up each other on being the most privacy protective, the end result over the next four to five years could be a patchwork of state regulations resulting in not only a compliance nightmare for companies, but also a wildly uneven distribution of privacy rights for consumers. The link for this article located at The Next Web is no longer available. . With jurisdictions fiercely vying to surpass one another in data security regulations, the ensuing environment may evolve into a disordered one.. GDPR's Impact on Global Privacy Regulations and Compliance Challenges

There is no denying the impact of the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which went into effect on May 25, 2018. We were all witness — or victim — to the flurry of updated privacy policy emails and cookie consent banners that descended upon us. It was such a zeitgeist moment that "we've updated our privacy policy" became a punchline. . Pragmatically, the GDPR will serve as a catalyst for a new wave of privacy regulations worldwide — as we have already seen with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and an approaching wave of state-level regulation from Washington, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Maryland. . The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has sparked a global transformation in privacy laws, pushing nations to enhance their data protection frameworks and adopt similar principles.
