At a recent publicity event here, two security companies and accounting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers showed off their latest tool for selling software: a calculator that lets clients estimate how much money they can save by using the companies' offerings. The tool highlights an ongoing change in the market. Despite the terror of Sept. 11 and cries of imminent cyberattack, companies aren't interested in security for its sake alone; they want to be able to cut their bottom line as well. "Every customer that we are talking to says, 'We want to save money; we want fewer suppliers; and we want someone to put themselves on the line and do it for us,'" said Steve Lesem, vice president of the security business unit for corporate application maker BMC Software, one of two companies that partnered with PricewaterhouseCoopers for the Tuesday event. Eleven years later, the Israeli whiz kid who never finished college is co-founder and chief executive of Check Point Software Technologies, one of the most profitable software companies around. How profitable? Well, in the first quarter ending March 31, Check Point's operating margin was a mind-blowing 61%. It made $83.7 million in profit on just $145 million in revenue. Last year, revenues were $425 million, up nearly 100% from the year before. Goldman Sachs projects 2001 revenues will be $650 million. Check Point sells security software, a must-have for any business connecting to the Internet. Despite the gloom surrounding the tech sector, a few silver linings -- companies like Check Point, VeriSign, and Symantec Corp. -- have shown through in the security field. Analysts at Dataquest expect the $2.5 billion market for security software to increase 22% this year. Few companies sell more security software than Check Point. Shwed's company, with offices in Tel Aviv and Silicon Valley, is making its mark in the constant battle with hackers. It produces two key products, firewall software, which is meant to keep hackers out of computer networks, and virtual private network technology, which allows computer users to "tunnel" through the Internet in an encrypted shell that prevents anyone peeping at what they are writing. According to market researcher IDC, Check Point has a 52% share of the firewall market and 41% of the virtual network market. Last December, a bank in Southern California received a call from an online customer asking why one of the bank's computers was trying to hack into his system. It turned out that the machine doing the hacking belonged to the bank's president and had been remotely commandeered by an employee. The president called Conqwest Inc., a Holliston, Mass.-based IT security services firm, which is now rolling out firewall software across the bank's 125 internal desktop, laptop and remote computers. Until recently, companies thought antivirus and virtual private network (VPN) technologies would keep remote worker connections safe. But as more workers have been accessing the Internet through broadband services such as cable modems, exposure to hacking attacks through those machines has increased. In October, for example, a hacker broke into a Microsoft Corp. employee's home computer and exploited the VPN connection to penetrate the company's internal network.
