Federal Agencies: Extended Deadline for Software Security Attestation

The Biden Administration has extended the deadline for federal agencies to submit documentation proving that the software they use was developed with appropriate security practices, because the form for reporting on such matters isn't complete. . Since coming into office in 2021, the Administration has focused on cybersecurity for the both the government and private sectors, with an emphasis on hardening the software supply chain in the wake of such incidents as the SolarWinds attack. One of the Administration's tactics was requiring software vendors to attest to their use of federal software development standards defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST's) Secure Software Development Framework [PDF]. The deadline for government agencies to collect attestation certificates from their vendors was September 14. But that dog ain't going to hunt just yet. . The Biden Administration's extension of software security compliance highlights the ongoing hurdles in vendor preparedness.. U.S. Sanctions on North Korea Over Sony Hack Without Evidence

As the New York Times reports, the Obama administration doubled down on its recent allegation that the Democratic Peoples Republic of North Korea (DPRK) was behind the hacking of Sony Pictures, announcing sanctions on 10 senior North Korean officials and several organizations in response to the incident.. Paradoxically, the administration acknowledged that there is no evidence that the 10 officials took part in either ordering or planning the Sony attack. Robert Hannigan's Call for Crypto Backdoors in Tech Collaboration

Writing that "privacy has never been an absolute right," Robert Hannigan, the head of British spy agency GCHG, urged the US tech sector to assist the fight against terrorism and other crimes by opening up their proprietary networks to government authorities.. Hannigan, in a Financial Times editorial on Monday, suggested that "technology companies are in denial" over the Internet's use "to facilitate murder or child abuse." Cybersecurity Insights on Antivirus Solutions for Computer Protection

In the Cabinet War Rooms in Whitehall, London - the bunker where Winston Churchill all but ran the UK's second world war operations - cybersecurity specialists summoned by antivirus firm Symantec today explained their views on defeating computer crime ahead of this week's Infosecurity conference in London.. While Charlie McMurdie, the cyberdetective amongst them, gave some fascinating background on the cases her group is fighting - against the likes of Anonymous - I was dismayed at the lack of interest the group showed in what seemed to me to be an important, tangible security measure posited last year. I refer to the notion of mimicking successful public health inoculation policies (think smallpox eradication) and ensuring that every computer bought in any shop (or online) is protected with a powerful vaccine: modern antivirus software. That way, users would be protected at source from everything from ID-theft-fuelling keyloggers to the bot infections behind megadollar phishing and DDoS attacks. And when ISPs sense a PC is spitting out phishing spam or service-denial packets, they could cut the internet connection until the machine is vaccinated.
